Stupid question time: you run you vent line and some fuel splashes up into the vent line. If the line goes down and then back up or has a dip in it, the fuel will sit in the low spot and block the vent line until it has enough positive or negative pressure to push/suck fuel.
I had a bad smell coming from tank, ended up being a couple of oz of fuel that had been sitting in the low spot.
Side note what diameter hose?
A very narrow hose should work just as good, I would think.
