so I snapped the rear output on the ole 205 this weekend.. the same case has been in my rig since it was on 37's back in 2005 and its taken a beatdown or two since then, my friends said the ass end of the rig was several feet of the ground and i landed full throttle when it snapped.

curious how many of you guys have had or seen a similar break?

plan is to drop another 205 in a keep on beatin it..

i would have thought i'd bust a 1350 joint, drive haft or axle way before the 205 but ya never know

done it and know several others that done it just put another one in it and beat on it some more

thanks, just wondering how often this happens... i think the output bearing was a little worn because the seal kept going bad and there was a little play in the yoke, i couldn't tell if it was just slop in the splines or what but I run it til it gave up

Still a lot of good parts in the case. The big aluminum plate on the back, was the only thing that I ever had a problem with.

yep, 32 spline ford unit..

i see that JB conversions has an "upgraded" output shaft but its not any beefier in the area that I broke and I they are closed this week so I can't find out if the material or heat treating is upgraded or not.

either way I don't see myself buying one because the original lasted so long, just wanted to find out about their part in case this becomes a problem for me..

Cool I'm pouting together a chev 203 to ford 205 doubler with Jeds machine adapter... Figured the 205 was strong... Yer makin me nervous lol

i dont think anyone should be nervous about this thread, sure theres a few broken 205s out there but their still one of the best if not the best stock unit of choice...the take a beatin for sure loller.gif

I think you'll start to see a lot more broken ones as all the cases are at a MINIMUM 20 years old, and most are 30-40. That's a lot of impact/stress on that output shaft. And they came out of trucks that got used and abused (for the most part) before we ever get our hands on them.

I'd probably spend the $ to get a NEW output, even if it was just a new stock output. Unless you just got another case laying around.

Hell, a buddy of mine blew his completely in half on the freeway two weeks ago. He doesn't even wheel!

is lomax stuff still available for 205? i was under the impression they packed it in on the 205s, just dana300 and other stuff, but that may just be the lomax 4:1 kit and case :dunno:

jb conversions offers a replacement output shaft.. the only upgrades they mention on their website is in the oiling passages and they note that area of the shaft is the weak point but thats not where mine broke, i really think i the output bearing was shot letting it shock load more than normal.. I plan to talk to them and see if their part offers any other upgrades over stock..

I'm gonna throw my spare case in there and go back to beatin on it, if i pop another one soon i'll buy that upgraded unit, if not i'll keep replacing them every 7 years- much cheaper than bling case i can still break
