propane

If you are going to run dual mixers with an electric lockoff valve you will need one that has a high flow rate. The standard ones that look like nitrous solenoids will not flow enough for two vaporizers. You will either have to use a high volume electric lockoff or use a vacuum lockoff valve. The vacuum lockoffs will handle enough flow of propane for two vaporizers.

Re: Re: propane

What is special about a "lockoff" valve? Why couldn't one just use a normally closed solenoid valve?

Pretty sure that is just "what they're called", since it is a solenoid valve.

I'd reckon there are ones rated for LPG and that is what constitutes it being called a "lockoff" valve.

I know that some propane components are made from brass because they are non-sparking. But high pressure liquid propane does not have enough oxygen to ignite inside the line, so I can't imagine that is what is special about a "lockoff" valve?

People think propane is in the tank at some massive pressure that only specially made valves can handle, but its not. Depending on temp it can get around 200 psi, but that's about it.

Solenoid valves that could outflow a "lockout" valve are a dime a dozen. I thought about using one per tank on a 2-tank system in the past to switch between tanks from the driver compartment and not have to get out.

The ones rated for LPG are UL approved and will not freeze up when propane is flowing through them.

Why run a lock off I don't and have never had a problem, if the motor isn't running no fuel is flowing.

The lockoff valve acts as a safety valve. Vaporizers can and will get trash under the primary or secondary seats ans cause fuel to flow straight thru. Also the diaphragms and other replaceable parts that wear out in side will cause this to occur as well. I have seen fuel systems with no lockoff valve that sat in one place and emptied a tank of propane over a period of time. The vacuum lockoffs and some electric ones also have a built-in filter which every system needs.
