You don't have to rack up student loans to go to college. Hell I actually MADE money going to college.

Some people do, especially for advanced degrees (medical doctor, lawyer, etc), but racking up more than your projected first years salary in student loans to get a bachelors degree is just irresponsible IMO.

Granted I never had any student loans, but having a student loan makes a hell of a lot more sense than a car loan!

And on this note ang doc, and Lawyers avg income is like 65k a year and to go to school for 5 plus years to make that doesn't make sense to me there is so much opportunity elsewhere.

798 pipeliners make 250-300,000 year without racking up student loans, we do work 7-12s most time on pipelines though so not much time fir play unless take a layoff fir couple weeks

I like to think I would live cheap and permantely go home and retire ASAP. But it would be hard to make that money and not have a few toys.

I hear about those type of jobs all the time,

What kind of work is it/are you actually doing?

I've found that there is a HUGE pay differential between jobs that you have to be away from home/travel/etc for extended periods of time, and jobs that you get to go home at 430 every day...

I quit a sales job that required weekly travel (3-4 days a week in hotels) for a job 5 miles from home, ~45 hrs/week

you can take a layoff if you want to go home but you aint making money at home. operators clear and dig ditch, and welders fit pipe and weld, lines under high pressure so every weld has to be xrayd before it can be lowered in ditch and backfilled. there is huge difference I am union operator, I can make 5,000 week pipelining or stay close to home make 2,000 week. I try to work about half and half to get sum wheelin time in.

Yeah I will say that a college degree isn't for everyone. Actually I think our society has created a common misconception that you have to go to college to get a good job. The problem is that these days more and more people are going to college as a means to a way to get a good job (in theory) instead of going to college to pursue knowledge towards an advanced level skill set worthy of a high level position, pay etc. We are seeing more and more college graduates without any specific skill set of value adding qualities worthy of employment. People are going to college because "that's what you do" instead of "this is what I want to learn about" and that's a problem. But I also understand that education is never wasted. If I had to do it all over again I'd still go to college and get my degree because the dedication I invested played a huge role in how I think and who I am today.

On a side note.. people are talking about finding a woman that likes wheeling more than you.. I didn't know this was possible. Sounds like a unicorn from that hot / crazy matrix video.

just posted what union operator weekly scale is, didn't mean hurt your feelings, and that you can make more than most with college degrees.

So if he is out of town all year on 7-12s and getting per-diem he has no life but is banking like a motherfawker. :****: but I'm sorry this is all a lie. I made all that up. I'm a goat farmer. Yea I grow goats.. Them ones that you yell at and they pass out like a ol drunk bitch, thems my money makers.. 7 bucks a pop and grow bout 3 a week. If anyone wants to get in on this ill mail some beans and you can plant them yourself and be a high roller on no time..

Have you ever saw the bills for a poultry farm? Winter time I pay $6-7000 gas bills a month. And over $20k a year in just power bills.

Bottom line.....hard work and determination. Regardless of education and yearly salary.
And an understanding wife helps! :****: :cougar:

There can be a big difference between gross and net. He's thinking you meant net I bet. Talking about gross isn't worth much though, not that your income is any of our business.

If you meant net then I agree with him, you suck at managing money.

I wish I could take home even 10% of my companies' gross sales. :)
