If anyone is wondering why I did 14 years and then got out, I will explain. One way the military will ROYALLY **** YOU is if you have injuries from a prior deployment and you are now apart of a reserve unit that is called up to deploy then you must have enough time on your contract to fulfill the time requirement. Not sure if you all remember the term "stop loss", this is where if you had even 1 day left on your contract then you could be subject to serve no matter what. They did away with that, however to sign an extension so that you have the required time for deployment. HERE IS WHERE THE ****ING BEGINS. In order to sign the extension, you must first sign a release of liability of any prior injuries. GET THE PICTURE

2011-2012 Deployed to Camp Buehring, Kuwait I was in an aviation unit.

I also work full time for FL NG, as a mechanic, been doing that since 2007 as well.

Yea I heard about that one. My wife was caught up in that stop loss before her last deployment.

That is why I strongly urge every prior/current military member to go and get every little thing documented. It may not be too much of an issue today but when you get older, I assure you that you will be glad you did.

My cousin was stop lossed a couple years ago and sent to Afghanistan, and my brother just got back from Afghanistan a few months ago and he said they've been telling them that there's a chance he might get sent to Iraq before his contract is up in less than 8 months.

Saw enough to know I was not interested in going the career path. Contract work was worse. Been closer to death than I care to admit and in the end began not to feel or care about the danger. That's when I knew it was time to stop.

Thanks for your service everyone. Im not in the military but my brother in law is a SFC in the army. Not sure what he does exactly but I think its something to do with communications. Right now he is station in Naples, Italy.

It is cool to see this thread. I have an enormous amount of respect for all men and women who serve in our Military. I am going to give a shout out to my old man. He is a Marine (not was, never say someone WAS a marine it will piss them off) and was in Vietnam during the Tet offensive in 1968. We bought him a Time Life book a few years ago for Christmas; it was tons of photos sorted by year. We looked at the years he was there, and found a picture that looked like him. When he looked at it, he said he wasn't sure that was him, but he was 100% positive the black dude on the right was his best friend because "for 13 months they never left each others side." That being said we looked at the picture again and it was actually my dad. I cant tell you how cool that is to look through thousands of random published pictures and find your old man. He is the one in the front and the color picture is him on the Ho Chi Minh Trail. This is also a testament to the fact that under the right circumstances race does not matter! (dad is not exactly the picture of racial tolerance)

That is AWESOME. . SEMPER FI. I have made 2 deployments as an Infantryman to Iraq. It was not easy deployments but I have all the respect in the world for our Vietnam veterans for the hell they went trough there and after they returned home. Also race is never an issue when bullets are flying and never seen an atheists at that time either.
