High mileage Deesuls

Chevy big block :flipper:

No more than I am going to pull it, this may be the best bet. I have a 2006 duramax at work I would buy in a heartbeat, but it is a regular cab. I am thinking that a big block gas burner may end up being the better route.

If I were looking for a tow rig on a budget I'd look hard at gassers. You'll get a lot more truck for the money and you'll probably wind up with a much newer truck.

That said I have a 2007 Classic Duramax that just turned 299,000 miles. I've owned it from day one and the only thing it's needed are tires and shocks. I did replace the brakes at 250,000 but they still had 1/2 the pad left.

I am going to address this from a dependability standpoint as well as my own experience. I drive an 08 6.7 cummins with only 68,000 miles on it. It had a rear main seal leak at 43,000 miles and egr issues at about 46,000. I had the seal fixed and the egr and dpf deleted and haven't had any issues since.
Now, I'll share my experience with the GM trucks. You and I have messaged before and we are in the same business. We have had 5 duramax trucks in 6 years. The guy we share our warehouse with has had about a dozen in the same amount of years. The highest mileage truck in the pack is at 285,000 and the only thing replaced so far are the tires, brakes, and an alternator. That's a pre-emissions truck. 3 of the others were all dpf only trucks that we ran up to 150,000 and 180,000 miles. Again, only tires and brakes. The newer trucks with the DEF systems on them have been run from brand new to about 140,000 (I think is the highest mileage truck in the group of newer ones we have). The sensors on the DEF tank and system have been an issue on all of them. Not a huge deal but and inconvenience.
Keep in mind all of these trucks have lived with a gooseneck trailer behind them or a 1,000 gallon fertilizer tank. We haul 5, 250 gallon totes frequently. That's max towing capacity between the truck and trailer. No transmission or motor issues with any of these trucks with that kind of load almost daily. Hell the truck I drive is a 2012 duramax with 108,000 miles and still on the original brakes.

If you never run aftermarket DEF in a Duramax, you'll NEVER have an issue... Blue def is a killer of GM emission systems :****:

I just bought a 04 2500 8.1 4wd crew cab short bed with only 48k miles for 15k this winter. There's great deals out there On gassers just gotta be patient and look for them. Around me that same truck with a duramax and more miles still cost 7 grand more. Let's say gas is 2.50 a gallon, for that 7k price difference that will buy you 2800 gallons of gas and at 10mpg that 28,000 miles you can drive before your our as much money as it cost to buy a diesel from the start.

Good to know! I usually have the dealership top me off when I get the oil changed but sometimes I have emergencies on the road and have to get what's available. If you don't fill up after so many miles it limits your speed and eventually disables your vehicle until you put DEF in.

Thats a hell of a deal! Less than 200k on a standard **** Cummins for $8000

My dmax has had only maintenance, still on original brakes, at 240k.

The trans has limped a couple times when I drive like a jackass, but thats with ATP tunes on the dsp5 and a 425 rwhp tune (according to ATP).

I really like the tow tune, makes pulling the 34' tag with 2 rigs pretty effortless

I looked for 2 years before I found my truck. It's a 95 Dodge 2500 with the 12 valve Cummins. I paid under 3500 for it, now granted it's not a show truck but it's reliable and paid for. When I drove it home it had 325xxx on it and it just crossed 350xxx and I wouldn't have a problem changing the oil and taking off to califonia and back with it. Only issue I had was a fuel line split one day but on a 20 year old truck that's not a major issue. just be patient and don't rush.

Why does everyone always say drive to California? Why not get in it and drive to North Dakota, or Ontario, heck you could even drive to the Panama Canal! For a bunch of east coasters, Yall sure do want to go to California a whole lot! Lol out loud!!!

Throw this in there and the limp mode issues will be fixed. I tow both rigs on the 100 hp setting with no issues.

99 3500 24V CTD 4wd - 239k
PO installed a warmed up transmission/converter, Blue Chip VP44, Bosch RV275's, AFE, 5" Turbo Back and all the Lukes Link parts. Running a Juice With Attitude.
Daily driven and gets 14-15 in town and 18-19 highway and around 12 towing my 4runner, dirtbike and a full load of gear for 2 people on mostly 2 lane back roads through the mountains to Harlan last month.
Gave 8k for it in January and I've done front calipers/pads since one was sticking, replaced the #5 injector supply tube, a MAP sensor and thats it. Can't complain about it at all for a truck with the age and mileage.
