TJ V8 fan shroud - lots pics

As some of you may know, I'm building a Chevy EFI 350 into a TJ.

For those who don't know, the inlet and outlets are reversed on a Chevy from a Jeep

I bought an YJ radiator from online at Radiators.com ($220. Part #2825)

or something like that. I can't exactly remember, maybe I'll edit this when I do... but it was for a YJ. Now I know that mine's a TJ, but my old YJ radiator (still have that jeep too) was removed when I put a V8 in it, and I gave it to Amanda for her TJ when hers died. So I figured if a YJ radiator fits a TJ, then a TJ radiator should fit a YJ.... anyhow, this is a Chevy V8 conversion radiator and it was only like $200 or so. Much cheaper than I've found elsewhere, and it's thick so hopefully cool well.

So anyway, this is the pics of my original YJ factory I6 shroud installed onto this conversion radiator.

The openings on the YJ shroud are approximately 19.5 by 19.75 round (it's just not quite perfectly round. More oval shaped, but just barely.

The Chevy fan is almost 20 inches around. It just barely won't fit into the shroud.

So I trimmed off about 1/2 inches on the blades and test fit everything.

Looks like a good fit, I'll still need to lower the shroud ever so slightly. I've got about an inch clearance on the top, and maybe a 1/16th on the bottom after trimming the blades.

I should have enough material on the shroud itself, where it bolts to the radiator, to oval out the mounting holes and just lower it about 1/4 inch. That should give me about the perfect amount of room on the bottom, and still have enough room on the upper as the motor torques upward and right under load.

looks real clean Tony. How did you get the fan balanced back out? I know by expieriance:booo: that water pumps dont like even the slightest embalance(sp) I found out in Montana of all places and had to buy the only electric fan in west yellowstone:booo:
 
In my 401 YJ, I bought the Advance Adapters aluminum conversion radiator that they sell. It was designed for their motor mounts (which I didn't use). Anyhow, when I installed it, my fan that I wanted to use hit the lower radiator hose, so I trimmed it to size. Ran it like that for a good solid 3 or 4 years, including lots of 3 and 4000 rpm stuff, with the trimmed fan. Never experienced a problem with water pumps (but still didn't cool as much as I liked). Eventually, I took the radiator to get the lower hose location moved even lower so I could run a factory (uncut) fan.

With this one, I very very very carefully scribed an line using the original edge as a guide. I used my old geometry protractor thingie (I dunno what it's called anymore, but it's like those things old sailers used on maps - two pointed widgets that are held apart by a screw).

And the pics you saw of the fan was not the fan I'm using. It was just an extra fan I had lying around that I could quick cut for mock up. Here's a pic of the real fan (after trimming) and the shroud.

Looks good Tony, those clutch fans are the best for pulling air, are you running the clutch still or do you have an adapter to make it solid?
 
Clutched for now.

edit..... I threw the whole thing out and started fresh with aluminum. Turns out the fan was ballanced OK, but didn't suck enough air. When I put a bigger fan back on, then the shroud didn't provide enough coverage on the shroud. Take this as a don't do it. Too lazy to take new pics, but the new one works MUCH better.
