Went to order a master install kit but I'm not sure which one to get. They offer 89-98 or 88 and older. I didn't realize there was any difference in them before the newer ribbed housings. Anyone know how to id the year assuming there probably isn't any markings left on the housing?

88 and older is non ribbed. CUCV style.

Really? I thought it was way later that they started the ribbed ones. Huh, learned something new. Thanks thumb.gif

Edit* - not sure if it makes a difference but they also offer a 98 and newer. So 3 different kits.

Here's some info copy and pasted from my notes when I've researched this same question...

In 1988 some vehicles remained with the old style rear pinion bearing and some came
with the new larger rear pinion bearing and race. 1989 and up stay with the larger bearing. If you
have an 88 truck verify rear pinion bearing size.

Around '97/98+ the only difference is the pinion seal, all the hard parts are the same.

For 1998+ applications, the pinion face seal AAM-26060977 must be purchased and installed on the hub to match the pinion seal diameter in those axles.

Hope this helps.

Welp, I ordered my install kit the other day so hopefully I picked the right one. But if not, at least I'll know which one I need and someone will get a good deal in the classifieds. Thanks though

I have an 03 axle and was sent 88 down install kit. Didn't have time to send it back all I had to change was one of the pinion bearings. The pinion seal seams to fit fine. ???
