Ok, so my girlfriends Runner hasnt had working intermitant wipers since we bought it. With the rainy season here now, I decided to try and look into it a little bit. (That and Im gonna be taking it on a road trip over the weekend :flipoff: ) I took the kick panel off the passenger side on my 84 Toyota because I could hear my relay clicking back there, and voila, there was the relay just behind the emissions computer. I figured I could pull mine and pop in hers to eliminate the relay as a problem or fix it. Anyway, when I pulled her kick panel, obviously the engine computer is back there, but the wiper relay wasnt behind there.

Now, a little background on the problem... Her low speed and high speed work fine, as does the washer sprayer. However, when you use the washer sprayer, the wipers dont automatically come on to wipe like normal, and as stated, the intermitant doesnt work.

When I got to my relay, theres a main plug that plugs into the relay, but if you trace up the wires, it splits off into two plugs. When I unplugged the larger of the two, I lost all wiper functions. However, when I uplugged the smaller one, I could duplicate her problem exactly, no wipers with washer, no intermitant. but still have normal low/high wipers.

So, I was thinking maybe someone has the wrong relay in there and didnt plug the second connector in because there wasnt a plug, or maybe it just was unplugged, or maybe its just a bad relay. BUT, I cant find the damn relay! The only one under the EFI computer is the warning light relay or some crap, HOWEVER, there is a small plug that is almost the same as the small plug that I unplugged on mine to make my intermitant wipers stop working, in basically the same spot, but with no relay anywhere to be found - :wtf:

In short, does anyone have any idea where the relay is, or what my problem might be? Ive also considered the combo switch on the column, but I figured I would start with the relay since it was the "easiest"

should be over behind/above the passenger kick panel :;

I had a similar problem with my truck... someone had done some jerry-rigging after they broke off the wiper control and ended up frying the intermittent wiper box thing.

If I remember right, it's in the kick panel above the ECU... but there was a gotcha... if the rig didn't come with intermittent wipers, there was either a jumper or a pair of plugs that had to be plugged together to make the high/low wipers work correctly. Sounds like maybe that's what's going on in the rig in question?

You guys are REALLY helpful, haha.

Anyway, heres where things can get REALLY weird then I guess...

The body is an 84 apparently (or so says the VIN plate on the door jamb), but the dash VIN is the same as the firewall VIN, which is the title VIN which is an 87 4Runner, which is what it is.

So, at some point, someone has swapped the body on this thing and put the 87 interior back in the 84 body which is on the 87 frame/chassis. I'm assuming for body work or something, since the whole thing has been repainted also. The kid I bought it from bought it from a guy that worked at a body shop so I'm thinking he did the work.

So, Im hoping that it was just poor misassembly then maybe, and someone just missed a plug? EVERYTHING else works on the truck (cruise control, rear wiper, rear washer, rear window, all other climate functions, etc), so this is really the only thing that makes me say "hmmm..."

Any ideas would be helpful, but I think my only option is to keep digging and try to find the damn relay and see whats up...

Yup.

I hate those kinds of wiring issues... the ones where somebody has screwed with something and it's not "factory" anymore, thus I'm stuck figuring out what the heck is going on and what's doing what for myself.

Its so frustrating... I dont know where to even start, I cant even find the wires that GO to the relay to track back to the relay

Of course it doesnt help that Im trying to do this in the rain too

Sounds to me like in all that parts swapping he added the intermittent controls but not the relay, it's probably still in the remains of the other vehicle.
:haha:

Found the answer to that... They do have a relay. There is also a nice test procedure for the relay in the manual. Now I just have to find the damn thing
