ok here we go.......

I have an 85 block, 87 block, 87 head.

heres the combo i need to know if this will work. 85 crank, 87 rods(3) (1) 85 rod 87 head. I just had 1 rod bearing fry....,.and I needed a new cap/rod and reuse the piston.

I think all 22r-re cranks are the same.....am I right?

I Know somethin changed 1/4 inch in the 87 motors....was it the head height? or the block.....If the block height was different, wouldnt the rods be different? or the crank turn a little higher?

Also, anyone put a 87 head on a 85 block?? what timing chain kit u use.....

found this....can NE 1 verify?

1981 - 1984 22R Block
Deck Height 11.280"
Stock Bore 92.0mm - 3.622"
Maximum Over Bore 93.0mm - 3.662"
Big Bore Forged Piston Kit 94.0mm - 3.701"

1985 - 1995 22R-22RE "Laser Block"
Deck Height 11.090"
Stock Bore 92.0mm - 3.622"
Maximum Over Bore 93.0mm - 3.6662"
Big Bore Forged Piston Kit 94.0mm - 3.701"

All Toyota 20R - 22R - 22RE engines use the same crankshaft and connecting rods. To accommodate the different deck heights, Toyota changed the compression height (piston pin location).

i thought either deck height or head height changed from 86-87?
so i should be able to use 85 piston on 87 rod if not??

This info is correct. Laser blocks are '85 and later, so the parts you have will interchange.

Yep, you can use the '85 piston on the '87 rod, should be the same length. The deck height change was in '85, so your '87 and '85 blocks should be the same. Look on both blocks for the "keyhole" casting indicating a laser block... see this page, last pic: http://www.lcengineering.com/technotes/index.php?p=view&catid=1&id=49. The keyhole casting is where the oil return fitting is drilled and tapped on turbo motors.

Since the '85 and '87 blocks are both laser blocks, you don't have to do anything special with the timing chain to put one head on the other and vice versa. They interchange.

got it. thanks for the reply.

also,

when using dual chain block, 20R head, and bowled pistons, 92mm valves, stiff springs and a large cam(steep long duration).....how much should the pistons be decked? Will prob. be useing the largest pistons ( i think 97mmish) stock is 91.9
