Well I got a 1984 toyota 4 runner with the 22r carbureted engine in it. I was driving it last night and then took my friend home, and when I got to his house it just died on me. When I try to start it, the engine just makes the cranking noise like it wants to start and it doesn't work. When I turn the key on my gas gauge still goes up and shows I have gas, and if I give it gas I will start to smell gas from it flooding probably. Any ideas what it could be guys? I'm thinking it might not be getting any spark or something, but I'm not sure. Also, another question I have for you guys is does anyone make fuel injection conversion kits or something ? Or is there even such a thing? I hate the gas mileage of the carbureted engine, but maybe theres a way to swap it to efi or something? Thanks for all your help guys, and hope to hear from you soon.

I thought you had that truck with the 3.8 in it? What happened with that?

I would check spark man. Sounds like its getting fuel (too much if anything), but no spark would put a hinder on it running.

Also, you can convert it to EFI, I will be doing this to mine soon enough. Search around a little for some info. If the 22R in your truck is actually an 84 or newer block (head actually), the EFI stull will bolt up on the intake side no problems. Then, its just O2 sensor in the exhaust, ECU, distributor, fuel pump, etc to make it work.

Pull a plug wire off a spark plug and have a buddy hang onto it. Crank the motor over and if ya see him start twitching you know you have spark:haha:

Mine has always been hard to start, I have to crank it and pump the gas at the same time (not hold, crank and pump), usually will start after that. Check the timing too.

timing chain,broken guide or chain.
if it jumped a couple of teeth it will do this

timing chain is fine, and I'm definately getting fuel to the engine because I can smell it flooding. I figured out I'm not getting any spark. So whats next then. I either need a new distributor, distributor module, or a igniter or coil or whatever its called right? How can I tell which one I should buy? Schucks wants like 600 bucks for all 3 of those parts :(. Oh and I sold the buick. It had to many problems and a guy that was a mechanic wanted it to fix it up. I just didn't have the time to fix it or anything, so I sold it and got myself an 84 toyota 4 runner with the solid axle and 22r engine. I bought it last sunday and it was running great and I have been driving it all over the place, the engine has always reved itself up a little bit too much though, especially when its cold. So I'm guessing I need to adjust the choke :redneck: . Either way I don't know how to make this thing get spark :(. Thanks for your help guys and let me know your suggestions please!

Do you get spark out of the coil? Or just no spark at the plug wires? Check for voltage at the coil. Check fuses.
