I'm building a 84 22r an was going to run keith black 9.7 to 1 pistons but all of them i found say they are for an 85 an above . Does anyone know if they sell a performance piston for the 84 an under? Or what the difference is or if they will swap over. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Will not swap over, 84 and younger use a dome piston/ 85 and newer us a flat top piston. The deck height of the block is slightly different, but enough that you cant interchange parts. As to performance parts for 84 check LCE Performance if they have anything it will be expensive but they are the best in the buisness for 22 series engines.
If you want to boost compression you can run a 20r head. For optimum performance you can have the 22r valves cut in the 20r head, but you will have to run propane or carb as an efi will not fit a 20r head.
If interested i have a 20r head complete with intake carb and exhaust.

But i've had plenty of luck building the bottom end stock just run a port and polish, small cam, degree the cam in if you can and a header.

I've "heard" that you can get the crank offset ground enough to create a "mini stroker" and use the 85-up flat top pistons in a 84-earlier "tall deck" block.

Off to do some research... :P

^This.

Don't worry too much about the bottem end. Power is built in the head on these motors. A good amount of port work with a good cam and header will really wake these little motors up. Any more than that and it gets too expensive for the little amount of gain. It's much cheaper to do a 3RZ swap than try to get a lot of power from a 22R.

who do you use for the porting ? what cam would you use on a 87 22r gonna run it on propane. would a turbo be worth the trouble with a ported head, cam, propane ?

If you got the money for a turbo, I would take that and put it into a 3rz flashemifyougotem 165 horse stock so any add ons will be even better. 0.02

They sell kit s online i just cant remember the site but it better to let someone with experience do it. You can get bout 20-30 HP with a good port and polish job and with a Turbo your forcing air thru so its even better the less turbulence air and fuel encounter on the way into the combustion chamber the better you be surprised what just gasket matching intake and the head does let alone a good port and polish job

I still have that 20r block and head that I believe was in a dirt track car and probably has some work done on it if anybody is interested.

I'll sell you the carb intake, head with 22r valve cover and manifold for $50
I don't have the rocker arms but the stock 22r ones will fit and are lighter, so yet another gain.
