So I picked up a new 4runner. 87 22re, auto. When I bought the truck it had a knarly engine miss. So I bought new tuneup parts and installed them. Then hooked up my timing light. Truck was at 1degree ATDC...I set it to spec 5degree BTDC. Then I tried setting idle. I undid the check connector and left my timing light on so I could use the rpms off my light, set it to 800(I believe thats spec for auto?). Anyhow, according to my light the truck is at 800. That tach in the truck still says 500 and it does not want to idle in gear? Actually I can turn the idle screw everywhich way and the rpms do not change?

So yeah, can anyone point me in the right direction?

I think a brand new Tacoma should idle just fine. :awesomework:

Who knows you have to test things, and if you don't know how get a book. and if you still don't know how. Take it to the dealer.

It could be an idle air control valve problem
Tps problem

Try unscrewing that screw. Take a wire brush to all the carbon at the end of it and spray EFI cleaner down the hole. Clean your throttle body.

Make sure that with the test port shorted it actually can set base timing. Then make sure that it is advancing properly with the test port NOT shorted.

Check for codes, using a stethoscope check that all injectors are firing properly. Test test and more tests.

As dingleberry said, clean the throttle body plates/bore. I always adjust those by ear and feel.
