So, I already pushed the search button, and a few things came up, but didn't fully answer my questions....

In the 4x4 section, I posted a question about machine shops. This is regarding the same issue, but is more "technical", I think.

My brother just picked up a '95 Toyota 4Runner that had been rolled, then ran upside down for a few. The body is toast, but the drivetrain looks really good. The motor had recently been gone through, which is good. But now it has a rod knock. (Or what I would consider rod knock....) I don't know, maybe it is just wrist pins, etc.. But, when you start it up, it is rather noisy, then quickly quiets down with warm up. It is always there, though, in the background, no matter how quiet it gets. Also, it seems to stay pretty consistant with RPM's. It runs well enough that we drove it up onto the trailer to bring it home, then off the trailer into the driveway, and hell, I would drive it to the store if the roof wasn't pushed to the dash!!

So, with all rambling aside, what does it sound like to you? Rod bearings, wrist pins, bad main bearings, scored crank, all of the above???

Also, would like to know what should be checked/re-machined by a machine shop if it needs it. Or, would you suggest just trying new rod bearings or some other shortcut? I would rather do it right, you know?

DID YOU NOT LISTEN TO A WORD I SAID!?!?!?:fawkdancesmiley: :haha:
Yes, I did. Just seeing if there is any other ideas out there, and mainly looking for advice of what to ask of a machine shop...
drive it till it blows.... it's just a 22re
I guess I don't know what you mean. I know it is "just a 22RE" but I think that means different things to different people. This motor is fresh, just got tipped upside down. And, my brother wants a reliable motor, for the highway and offroad. He doesn't need it to blow up on the pass in the winter...

Also, he doesn't want/need a 5.0 in there. The 22RE is just fine for what he needs. The one in the 4Runner has good power.

Just giving you a hard time:kissmyass: Really though I want to hear this thing, I can almost 94.234% be certain of what it is after hearing it run:; Trust me when I say I have experience in hearing ALL different sorts of knocks and bangs come from a motor:redneck: :haha: :haha: :haha:

If it is just something minor, run it, what the heck, maybe in the meantime build that other motor.... OR like you guys had talked get the injection stuff setup and on ths motor that is in there run that and rebuild the 4runner motor in the meantime:awesomework:

As far as what you should ask a machinist, ask him how much for Line Bores, what prices he can get new parts for (ie. gaskets, rings, bearings, soft plugs etc.) usually he can get it cheaper, if he's a good guy. Ask about HOT TANKING!!!! Clean that bastard up, resurfacing the head, flywheel turn (if it needs it) GET A QUOTE! :awesomework:

What I mean by it's just a 22re is that they are pretty plentiful and not expensive. You can spend more to make one good and reliable than to purchase another. Just my .02 Even the one I've got now has started to make noise again after our roll at TSF. I just keep drivin it and if it blows before I've done my swap I'll just get another for a few hundred dollars.

Gotcha. I understand the concept, and if it was just a wheeler, I would say "Amen!" But, it is not. It is my little bro's first truck. I mean, his first daily driver. I want it reliable, and like I said before, it is almost brand new. What a waste!

I kinda think we would like the experience of doing a rebuild anyway.
