So, I already pushed the search button, and a few things came up, but didn't fully answer my questions....
In the 4x4 section, I posted a question about machine shops. This is regarding the same issue, but is more "technical", I think.
My brother just picked up a '95 Toyota 4Runner that had been rolled, then ran upside down for a few. The body is toast, but the drivetrain looks really good. The motor had recently been gone through, which is good. But now it has a rod knock. (Or what I would consider rod knock....) I don't know, maybe it is just wrist pins, etc.. But, when you start it up, it is rather noisy, then quickly quiets down with warm up. It is always there, though, in the background, no matter how quiet it gets. Also, it seems to stay pretty consistant with RPM's. It runs well enough that we drove it up onto the trailer to bring it home, then off the trailer into the driveway, and hell, I would drive it to the store if the roof wasn't pushed to the dash!!
So, with all rambling aside, what does it sound like to you? Rod bearings, wrist pins, bad main bearings, scored crank, all of the above???
Also, would like to know what should be checked/re-machined by a machine shop if it needs it. Or, would you suggest just trying new rod bearings or some other shortcut? I would rather do it right, you know?
