So I have a 22RE in my 85 Runner with around 250,000 miles on it... it is tired, smokes, rattles, stinks, etc...

I found a used 22RE out of a 93 that is complete sans starter, waterpump, and alternator that is supposed to be a good runner with unknown mileage.

Will everything from my 85 swap to the 93? Wiring, sensors, alternator, waterpump, etc...?

Anything I should look out for?

Thanks :D

The plenum/sensors may be a lil different---but you can just bolt your old plenum onto the new motor and go ---waterpump/alt good to go too :awesomework:

X2. I just put the motor from my '91 into my '85. You need to retain your '85 intake and exhaust manifolds. I tried to cheap out on gaskets and use the 3rd gen exhaust but it has no o2 sensor. Also had to change out the oil pressure sending unit cause one truck has a gauge and the other has an idiot light.

NOTE: when I was finished swapping it over it was puking coolant out the overflow and the gauge wasnt hot. I found that on the passenger side, behind the water pump the coolant pipes come out at different angles and the thermostat bypass hose was kinked. The fix was a diffent hose that had a pre formed 90* in it and no more problems.:awesomework:

X3 I do it all the time. Just take everything off your old engine and put it on the new one.

Yup, do what MarkM said. Use the later style intake manifold though. It gets rid of the cold start valve under the t-body and supposed to flow better than the older style.

Well, I picked up the 93 22RE today... well, actually the seller delivered it for me... :D

So I plan on putting a few gaskets in it, pulling the pan and seeing what the bearings look like, and throwing that bitch in as is, the chance that it rattles worse than my current motor are slim!

Anyone know off hand what size the top bellhousing bolts are on a 22RE so I can buy some bolts to hold it on an engine stand?

Have a look at the timing chain while it is easy to get at. I have a DOA timing set on my 22RE but you can get them cheaper from engnbldr.com

So today I put the 93 22RE on the stand and pulled the 2wd pan off of it.. and there is a BUNCH of chunks of PLASTIC in there????? Am I right in assuming that this is probably off of the timing tensioner deal? Where else would plastic come from????

I pulled all the rod bearing caps off,and they look good so I am going to torque them back on, put a 4wd pan on, and apparently pull the timing assy off and figure out where the plastic came from and fix that...

Timing chain guide chuncks. Pull the valve cover and peek down--you will see the exhaust side missing some of the guide. If not then it has broken before, and somebody fixed it but never pulled the pan to remove the chunks (common)

Not to hijack here but why does everyone always say to put in the METAL BACK guides?

The factory guides last about 100,000 to 150,000 miles before the guide breaks. Also by that time the chain tensioner is just about warn down to NOTHING. The chain stretches and the gears wear.

Don't these things need to be changed out at about the same frequency no matter what type is used??? Sure makes sence to me anyway. And finally half the million or so 22RE's I've pulled apart needed other major maintence now or in the very neer future by the time 150,000 miles rolles around.

I now return you to the previously scheduled tech talk.

With abuse---I have seen them go at 20k. Plus when they go--they wear a hole in the cover--dumping coolant in the motor. I see your point but I have to dissagree with it....

Woah 20k and a failure thats horrible. Must be parts from Rock lol... kidding

Yeah I know far too much about the damn front cover wear. But you can hear that poop rattle a mile away with the hearing aids turned down to low.

I guess if it's under heavy stress or like in Mark M.'s buggie where it is a sum biatch to get to it would be a good idea. But for any DD I don't see the need.

Just for poops and giggles what is the price of a steel backed set?

I can't remember the $$$ b ut its not bad---and the ones who sell them also sell GOOD quality chains with them....

I have seen them pop the guide and wear a hole--with no abnormal noises except durrin g start up
