I just bought a 88 toyota 4runner.. I put the timing gun on it to see where it sits (because it smells like its running rich) and it was about 2-3 inches away from the mark im thinking advanced.. It runs good but im not sure if the timing is advanced for sure.. I was reading somewhere its possible to be a few things that really add up if you just trouble shooting some guesses.. Such as MAF sensor, O2 sensor, egr, fuel injectors, and or a clogged intake? I dont know much about toyota's and this is my first EFI. Any help would be great.. I am in tacoma and if anybody that really knows there CHIT has time this weekend ill come to you.. :kissmyass:

to check the timing on a 22re you need to ground out to connections on the diagnostic port. then you can get an accurate timing. to see if the fuel has been tampered with check the maf, if the top lid has been opened then it could be running rich as someone could have been trying to get more power out of it

I dont really understand. I have no clue what the maf would look like tampered with or not.. I also dont know where to ground it out at..

It'll have a pile of silicone on the black plastic cover from being resealed, should look pretty clean if not messed with. I believe 88 was the first year of the new diag connector, something like E and E1 have to be shorted together. Get a service manual for the year or google it.

thats right. its actually E & T1 or T & E1. just run a wire from one to another then you can properly check timing. but definetly go on ebay and get a FSM for your vehicle. a chiltons isnt gonna cut it

Anybody wanna help me out for beer? Im usually a chevy guy and this computer stuff is passed my brain.. Like I said ill come to you.. hopefully its not too far.. I am pretty sure the timing is advanced because it sounds like the valves are ticking.. anybody not too far from tacoma that could lend a hand for a toyota noob? There is silicone on the black cover as well.. You guys saying t & e1 and e1, to me I dont have a clue what your saying.. Im thinking if I cant get anybody then ill just take it to a shop and have them deal with it..

I called hime and I never gotta call from him he said he would be up here yesterday (saturday).. I was reading some crap and it said to check my filter and if it was dirty at all to just replace it because a dirty filter will make it run too rich... found it in yota tech..

So I am thinking about putting a chevy 350 in it or a ford 302 since I dont know crap about this foreign engines.. How hard do you think it is to swap the two.. Either that a vortec 4.3.. I just cant find the problem for the life of me and alot of people say 22r/22re dont last very long when your wheeling ALOT..

is it best to swap a v6,v8, or just either replace or rebuild my 22re? If rebuild is the way to go whats some good shops that do that around tacoma and do a good job for cheap? the engine has almost 300k so it could be on its last legs more than anything.. Anybody gonna be around t-town tomorrow to confirm thats what I should do or wha? I also said Ill come to you guys..

wtf! Dont you live down the street from me? Come give a guy a hand I know you work on $hit all the time..:D
