i hope this makes sence but i have a 93 xj and under the valve cover was making some noise. i took the valve cover off to see if the rockers were tight. i noticed there was some slop in them side to side i heard that they should be tightened to 19 pounds. does anyone have any experience with this i know its not a rod knock but there is some ticking. so if anyon has any ideas let me know thank u.

Not trying to insult you or anything, but is it possible that it may have an exhaust leak? I believe those years were notorious for the manifold cracking.

Does it change with the RPM's?
Does it go away or get quieter when it warms up?

How many miles on the rig??? Did it sit for any length of time before you got it??? These engines are somewhat notorious for lifters bleeding off, causing the ticking sound... Does the noise come and go????

4.0 valves are non-adjustable. The 19 pound figure is the torque spec for the rocker bolts. Make sure the rocker bolts are tightened to 19ft/lbs, and that's all the adjustment there is.

It's common for them to tick or have a slight "knocking" sound... turn the radio up and don't worry about it. The 4.0 will last forever. I have one with 242,000 on it... it ticks, but it runs like a raped ape still.

x2:awesomework:

ALOT of those things have that "ticking". It is seemingly normal, but definately make sure yours is in fact nothing to worry about, before you just crank up the jams and ignore it.

Never ignore noises no matter how small. They can be life savers of a problem that could be catostrophic.:awesomework:

dont worry about insulting me i dont know too much about this stuff at all. it does not go away it goes faster as the rpms go up. the motor was just rebuilt 40 over about 10,000 miles ago if that. from the sounds of it i guess i will just have to deal with it. i am gonna take a video and try to put it on hear so people can hear it and tell me what they think.

Mine ticked from a stuck lifter I put some Lucas oil stabilizer in it reved the **** out it and no more ticking

On a side note it was sitting on its side for around 48 hours after I rolled it and it sat for another 2 months in my yard but I went out and charged the battery and it fired off with just a tick not bad
