Hello everyone as u can all see I'm new to forums in general hopefully I can become a contributing member of this community and get to know some new people as well. Anyways back to the reason for this thread I have a 1985 Toyota four runner with 5.29 gears a 4:1 transfercase lonfields detroit locker in front and welded in rear pushing thirty seven inch super swampers full Exo full disc brakes driveline brake etc anyways u get a general idea but this winter I'm looking to ditch the carberated 22 r and get a fuel injected v-6 the question is do I go 4.3 or 3.4 and one problem im struggling with is can the five speed I have hold up sort of on a budget because also want to do a twin stick any advice would be appreciated

IMO the 4.3 would be cheaper. I just did a 3.4 swap in my toyota but it already had a toyota 3.0 V6 so it was easy. Yours having a 4cyl. would make the 3.4 swap harder.
A good 3.4 with all the stuff you need is at least $1500 I think you can get good 4.3s for under $800
You might think about a toyota 2.7 from a tacoma. Thats a pretty easy swap into your rig.

I love this suggestion never even crossed my mind all I'm looking for us a little mor horse power and to drop the carb thanks a ton now more research lol

With 37's on a 22r truck I'd just go with a 22re upgrade. I have a 91' 22re wheeler on 38.5 boggers and it does just fine. My other rig is a 89' on 39.5 Iroks, it had a 3.0 that sploded so I installed a vortec 4.3/th350. While I do love the power the swap will nickel and dime you to death compared to the 22re if money is tight.

Just my opinion.

I would go 4.3, better options as far as stronger transmission's, cost as you can pickup one for around 5-700 complete with wiring and ecu. IMO its the overall better way to go.

Hi All:

This a good tech thread! :D

So why the 4.3L GM V-6 over the Toyota 3.4L V-6 Crash?

I don't doubt that the 4.3L will be easier & cheaper to purchase. But I'm wondering about performance & reliability between these 2 engines.

Thanks!

Alan

Overall longevity goes to the Toyota, But IMO Performance, cost, stronger trans options etc goes to to the 4.3. :corn:

4.3 all the way.... 3.4's are overpriced for what you can get out of them. I beat my head against the wall between the 2 for my buggy. 4.3 is easy to upgrade and are a dime a dozen. I got a spare longblock, in super good condition of craigslist for a 150. No way in hell are you going to find a 3.4 for that price unless your sucking **** and giving out free handy's.

Like Porter said plus replacement parts are typically cheaper and easier to come by..

Hi All:

So AFAIK there is only 1 version of the Toyota 3.4L V-6, but there seems to be 2 or 3 models of the GM 4.3L V-6.

The 4.3 had TBI, TPI, and Vortec versions; maybe even a supercharged model in the AWD Cyclone SUV?

What are the differences in performance between these different versions of the GM 4.3L V-6 engine?

Thanks.

Alan

There are multiple versions Alan. TBI, CPI,SCPI, Turbo'd , Carbed, and even a boat version :haha:

Later model SCPI are the best of the bunch and most sophisticated of the bunch. The Turbo version's are pretty rare (typhoon/cyclone) and run a totally different intake/injection setup compared to any other versions..

But realistically there are only 2 motors--with and without balance shafts.
