SO I have been discussing with a friend the option of me regearing to 5.13s in the HP D44 and F9"... I have 4.56s now, I will be putting in a 203/205 doubler. It is still a streetable rig and will continue to be so. I have a 700r4, so highway driving is nice. MY concern though is if the 5.13s are going to make me way rev happy on the freeway at 70mph...? Right now at 70mph, my truck is running aroun 1500rpms or so with 36 IROKs on. One reason i want to do the lower gears is that it seems like it takes it a little bit to get going form a stop, not much, but more than i feel it should. So i was thinking 4.88s wouldnt be enough, but 5.13s might be a little much, ALTHOUGH... I also have a set of 39.5 IROKs that at some point will go on and i think the 5.13s will be perfect for pushing the biggin's but maybe a little short for the 36's i dont care if i run a little higher on the highways because i dont go fast anyways...whadya think???

5.13s are 12.5% lower than your current 4.56s. If you only turn 1500 rpm on the freeway now, you will be turning 1688 rpm after swapping gears.

39.5" tires are (roughly) 9.7% taller than your current 36s. So to go the same speed on the highway with 39.5s and 5.13s, you'd be turning 1538 rpms.

Doesn't sound like too big of a deal to me.

(quick math, but it should be right)

cool, ya i just didnt think 4.88s would be a reasonable enough drop, and i think my numbers might be off too, like i wanna say maybe in OD maybe as low as 1200rpm at 60-70mph. mainly i am looking for get-up and go anyways, it is not meant to be hurled down the road at 80+mph, although it'll do it no problem....but i wouldnt know...:redneck:

Will it still be street driven with 39.5's?

My general opinion would be don't regear, especially since your doing the doubler. That gives you all the gearing you will ever need offroad. Regearing your diffs is a lot of extra work and you've probably already done it once so I would say don't spend the time and money over again.

Put those 39.5's on that 44 and yer dumb. I say leave it as it is. You're gearing will be plenty deep with the doubler (regardless of tires), and 4.56's are close to perfect for 36" on he street. Save your dough for 60's.

i was told i was dumb for putting 36s on a dana 30... guess i am an idiot... anwyays, I know i will have all the gearing in the world offroad, but i am more concerned with on road. I am going to have to setup gears for the front, because i am building the hp 44 and this is going to be it for a long while, i already looked into a dana 60, but decided it wasnt for me right now. i dont need to have the worlds strongest axle, my plans are to get the d44 going, get long u-joints and alloy shafts down the road, and that will be that, I think 5.13s might be a little much for the highway, but i feel that the 4.56s dont offer enough pickup off the line, plus i think it would help keep my tranny in shape and lasting longer with less stress from the stop and go. plus offroad i am not a lead foot to begin with.

:haha: Yeah I didn't even think about that part. With all the math I forgot about the breaky breaky part of the equation. :haha: :haha:

I am just talking about on road,, i know that the gearing offroad will be plenty, that is not the issue. it is onroad with the option of putting the 39.5s on for some short trips, and long trips with the 36s. I want to be able to drive fine and not be stressing my drivetrain like a jeep or toyota would from underpower issues...:haha:

And dont worry about the breaky breaky issue, i have seen guys with dana 60s break all the time...why would i want one of those...? pile of **** IMO:kissmyass: :fawkdancesmiley: :haha:

Go with the 5:13's---especially since you are currently only running 1500 r's @ 70 w/ the 4:56's; 5:13's should bring you in the 1700-1750 range; and yes, this will relieve some of the stop & go stress on drivetrain, unless your newfound 'power' finds your 'go' pedal being applied alittle heavier!:redneck: :D

Have a friend that was running 5:13 HP44/9 combo w/ 37" Boggers; Kept breaking chromo axleshafts on the 44, but never broke any gears--He wasn't kind to it either!!!

ugh, if it isnt one thing it's another, so they are really thinner than other dana 44 gears? I guess i dont see why they are any worse than toyota 5.29s. That is strange to me that he was breaking chromos and not the gears?:eeek: I plan on later down the road to install bobby long u-joints and the USA alloys... I think it will definitly hold up to my style of wheeling, even with my dumb 39.5s:haha:

The shafts are usually weaker than the gears, but 5.anyratio does have a small pinion, and the smaller the pinion, the more likely it is to break.

44 and 30 has the same knuckles and shafts thats what breaks. locked+gears=blowed up. I did 10 shafts with that combo. weakness is the shafts/knucks, not the gears.

Not that I have been running my setup long enough to really add much but I have a HP44 w/5.13 gears and had 35" Toyo's on it. The highway rpm's were not bad. And I had zero issues with breakage. I just stepped up to 38" SX's so we will see if the D44 will live with them.

I say if your going to regear go deeper so my vote is 5.13.
