5mge Timing

I need some help setting timing on an 82 5mge, anyone have any idea how to do this

1>find TDC on #1 piston pull distributor
2>pull valve cover
3>find #1 rocker arms I E make sure no pressure on either of them..
4>Drop the distributer back on #1 spark plug wire/cap <worst case if this don't work could be 180 out or a tooth off>
5>check the crank marks so its on 0 If you follow the previous procedures.

sometimes there a bitch sometimes easy...

I've done that already im confused by the marks on the crank and cams, this is a twin cam engine and there are two marks on the crank pulley that correspond with the cam pulleys which have two marks T and E when the cam pulleys are aligned with T, #1 is at TDC, but im concerned with the crank pulley in relation to the cam pulleys, the T and E marks are aligned.

IIRC on a 7mge all the marks have to be at the top with the belt tensioned. I was lucky and had a good friend that did it for me :awesomework:

What are you doing with the 5mge?

Its already in an 85 4x4 toyota that my brother got off of a friend, (it was and still is hacked and chopped together, im cleaning it up here and there when i have time) i had it running yesterday and ripped it up and down my hill a few times but it wouldnt idle i tried to adjust at the distributer but didnt get anything.

Very cool. Sorry I am not a little more help. I was just trying to keep the tools and the parts ready for the friend that put it all together.

5m should be a nice upgrade for a truck. 160ish horse is a nice number.

Ya i ran it up and down the gravel hill we have and i was sideways up the hill....and a third gear burnout...

Still No luck getting it running it runs like hell when it does, probably because of timing and wiring issues anyone know where i could get a wiring harness

They are fairly common in the local bone yard. I have no idea on how much they want for them but I know they are easy to come by.

Make sure you get one from a 5M car before 85' as they added a knock sensor to it that year. Usually a few Cressida's at the lakewood PAP. But yeah look for an 82'-84' Celica-supra or same vintage Cressida.
