Ok, Im going to pick up my 22RE from the machine shop today that I had planned on putting into my 88 4Runner (swapping from a 3.0). But, Ive been thinking it would be nice to have the power of a V6 even if it is going to be a "daily driver". So, Im wondering what the cost of a 5VZ 3.4 would run me, yet I cant seem to find any. I'm looking for one preferably out of a vehicle (Tacoma most likely) with a manual tranny, and the engine harness still intact. Obviously still in running condition would be nice as well. What kind of prices do these go for?

Just thinking outloud here, but I could buy the ORS conversion kit for a few hundred more than what I have in the 22RE already, and then a used motor and possibly be into a 3.4 for less than the 22RE. Id still need exhaust and a radiator, but I need that for my 22RE anyway. Hmm...

All I can say is that my 5vz is pushing about 190k and I've abused it for the last 100k and it's still running strong and can spin my 37's when needed. I see them pop up on CL quite often.

There was a couple on CL in the Portland area. I remember one a few days back for $750 with ECU, harness, and AUTO tranny. I picked up a 98 2RZ with full harness, ECU, 2WD tranny, exhaust and radiator for $600. I have a 22RE truck already, and the 2RZ has a lot more power so it should be fine for my 94 truck on 37's. I was going to go 3.4, but it will cost too much compared to the deal that I got. With the money that I am saving on the cheaper swap, I will be getting dual cases and a turbo tranny installed as well.

Yeah, Ive been trying to keep an eye on Craigslist. I saw one on Ebay in Spokane with harness going for 450 with like 15 hours left out of a manual Tacoma. I should have jumped on that one.

Anywhere other than Craigslist? Im trying to avoid shipping one too, but Portland would be about as far as Id like to go for one.

I saw a couple more in CL. One was like $450 but did not look like it was coming with the harness and ECU. The other one was like $1750 with harness, ECU and manual tranny. CL is really the only place I see them for affordable prices though.

Just make sure you get one that had a manual trans. I don't think you can hook a 5 speed to one that came with a auto. They don't come machined for the pilot bearing.
I've got one with only 77,xxx miles on it runs like new and comes with everything you would need for $1500 and a brand new in the box never used TRD supercharger for it for another $1500

Is the one you have from a manual tranny Mark? Its nice and low mileage, but I was hoping for the $1000 and under price tag for it, but you get what you pay for sometimes.

I read about the pilot bearing thing. I read that some you can get a pilot bearing to work, and others you cant on some years, thats why Im trying to find one from a manual truck just to be on the safe side.

Yes its a 5speed and I have the trans & t-case also. I bought a hole truck that was rolled so I have everything. I was saving it for one of my rigs but if someone will pay what I want I'll sell it. If not no big deal I'll get around to using some day.

just because its from a auto dont meen you cant use it. i used a 3.4 from a 2wd auto had the spot for pilot brg i had to find a manual ecu but it pluged right in. i have never seen one with out a spot for the pilot brg. try not to get one older than like 97 the ecu wont support a supercharger if you plan on using one

I dont plan on using a super charger, but I was told the wiring is different from auto to manual, not to mention Id have to track down a manual ECU, flywheel, etc. Id rather just get it all in one spot.

the only difference in wiring is the plugs for the tranny and you can just cut them off. the ors harness has the ones you need in the harness if you go that route. i got a ecu off ebay for $50 and a new flywheel for $100 at napa. or you can use your existing 3.0 flywheel.

I was gonna use the ORS kit. They said the auto harness was way different? So youre saying you still used the ORS harness with the auto engine harness with no problems? The 3.0 flywheel will work eh?

Hey TJ... Keep up the good work on this build, cuz if I EVER decide to go with a different motor than the good 'ol 22RE, then this is one of the ways I would go. (Preferably with a different project :awesomework: ) I really want to keep my rig original, but would also consider a 2.7 or 3.4!!

And now you know what I want for Christmas

:redneck:

ya i used a auto with a ors harness the only thing that is different is the plugs for the auto tranny the harness i got from ors had the wires for the 4x4 light and i had to find the ones for the reverse lights in the plug for the tranny and i just cut the rest off. the manual ecu pluged right in. you dont need the full kit from ors alot of parts they sell you you dont need. i have $2200 in parts for my swap thats every thing headers exhust clutch flywheel harness oil pan tranny tcase etc.the 3.0 flywheel and clutch will work i used a marlin 3.4 clutch and fly wheel and 3.0 throw out brg.

Im starting to notice that. Ive read a few swaps where people just re-used the 3.0 oil pans like you did, as well as the clutch stuff (or 3.4). Seems like all you really need to make it super easy is the harness, and maybe the crossover pipe since you can reuse the oil pan and dipstick crap, clutch crap, etc. Id really still just like to get the motor, harness and ECU from a manual truck so I dont have to piece it together, but it seems that every time I think about it, it gets easier than I thought.

In theory, I could take that auto setup, and put my 3.0 pan and dipstick crap on it, along with my clutch stuff, ORS harness, build exhaust, fiddle with some other minor things and be done with it assuming I could find a manual ECU.

Now to find an affordable 3.4 with harness and ECU

sky has the oil pan kit you need for $200 has everything and its all genuine toy parts from the dealer. you can get downey headers they are the only ones that dont use a crossover. for the price of the crossover you can get headers. dont buy the ors battery harness you can build one for about $30 they want 100 and some dollars for theirs. the ors harness comes with instructions on the charging system hookup. the swap is so easy and i swaped out a 22re. the ecu you can go to car-part.com and find one and most places will ship it just make sure its for the same year the model or 4x4 or 2x4 dont matter its just the year.

Also, for shits-and-giggles, try NIX99 in Lynnwood/Everett/Mukilteo-ish area. At least for reference!
