Well, I recently retired the Bronco from towing duties and got an 85 Suburban with the Banks sidewinder kit on it, J series intake, and I assume the fuel was cranked up when the turbo was installed, but I had to crank it up a bit more. :D
Today was the first time I've towed with it, out to Elbe, and I noticed when in third gear, it makes a strange noise any time I give it more than 1/4 throttle. . Sounds kind of like a vacuum with an air leak...(best I can describe it). :redneck: It only does it in third. Because of this I was fearing it might be the tranny, but a buddy mentioned it might be turbo surge.
Does anyone have any experience with this setup? I plan on changing out the 3" exhaust for 3.5" and deleting the muffler. Is this going to affect anything? Make the turbo surge (if that's what it is) any better or worse?

:corn:

I have a 6.5 and my turbo gets loud when im pulling a hill. Turbos make noise....its a good noise.:redneck:

Never heard of 'turbo surge'; but if you've got an air leak in the intake tube/hoses it'll make a loud, almost whistling noise, accompanied by an excessive amt of black smoke----check all your connections;make sure they're sealed and tight... Oh, and make sure the EGR system is working properly (if yours has it); if it does , it'll be right in the center of the intake, under the air cleaner lid...sometimes these can get hooked up wrong, and will also cause wierd driveability issues, kida like what you're experiencing!

Thanks for the suggestions, but maybe I should clarify the problem.
This only happens in third gear. 1st and second it'll boost up to 10 psi with no weird noise. When in third, and it makes the noise, it doesn't spool properly, and the EGTs rise fast. And to my understanding, the J series intake means no EGR system.

If EGT's rise fast, and you're getting this noise, you may well have an intake leak---check all your connections/seals etc... It may be that the lower gears give you enough grunt that the problem is masked until you hit 3rd...Also do you have alot of smoke while this is happening??Also, what kinda boost are you getting when problem is occuring?

Well, I looked into it a little more today. It looks as though I may have a small leak in the up pipe boot. I'm going to take it apart and clean it up, making sure it is sealing good. It doesn't seem to smoke any more than usual when this is happening, but then again, I'm paying more attention to the EGT guage than the tailpipe when the problem occurs. The boost is very low, between 1-3 psi when the problem occurs. In 1st and second, under the same amount of throttle, I see anywhere from 5-7 psi. It also seems to be happening in that spot right between starting to make boost, and kicking down a gear. If I give it a little more throttle when it's happening, the tranny kicks down, and the sound goes away.

Well, did you get it fixed? And I have a ?---In your avatar, how'd you get away w/ not being "Broken On Sac-up"??? I sure as hell don't have a "blingin Dana 30":redneck:

It seems like it's fixed, though I'll have to latch on to the trailer to find out for sure. I pulled the up pipe, and one of the clamps was on the rib at the end of the pipe instead of behind it. I also found that the two 3/4" rubber plugs that are on the intake manifold, were pretty badly cracked, and one fell apart when I tried to take it off. Also found that I do have an EGR manifold, and the hose had fallen off, though this actually turned out to be a bad thing to fix, because once I put it back on, it turned my black smoke at WOT, to grey smoke, and also seemed to rob a little power. So I took the chamber back off and unplugged it again. Everything seems to be doing good, but like I said, I'll have to wait till I get a trailer on it again to know for sure.

And as far as the avatar thing goes, it's from being ROTM.
I wish I had a blingin dana 30, that would be soooo sweet. :redneck:

Make sure the vacuum lines at the EGR solenoid aren't backwards---one of our guys at work put an inj pump on a 6.2L van, and reversed the vacuum lines at the solenoid...sounds alot like your describing when you hooked it up. Trace back to the solenoid and switch the tubes, then run it again..It made a huge difference in power, and significantly reduced the black smoke, which really means it's running at optimum efficiency---all the extra black smoke is really just wasted fuel..Doesn't take long, and may actually give ya alittle more power than your used to now!

The routing diagram is still on the core support, so I'll definately have to look it over. Thanks for all the help. :awesomework:

I'm actually surprised at how much power this thing has, cause I've heard alot about these 6.2s being dogs. It's my first diesel, so I'm just having fun playing around with it.

And I know black smoke is wasted fuel, but it sure is satisfying wasting fuel on people who piss you off. :haha:

Yeah, the Sidewinder turbo really helps them out---And X2 on the black smoke thing!!!:redneck: There's nothing more satisfying than pulling up to a stoplight next to someone that just cut you off or something---when the light turns green-just roll on the throttle, dumping the soot right thru his open window!!!!:haha: :haha:
