I have a 1999 jeep xj that has the 700r4 swap with stock 4.0 motor. From what i can gather it is a 1989 transmission it does not have the pressure taps on passenger side and i think it had a 9 before serial number. My question is do i have to have the torque converter lockup? I have read several other thrads but just want to be sure. I dont want to burn up my tranny just had it rebuilt but aint really woried about fuel millage not much of a road ride but do drive it regularly on road. Thanks in advance for help.

No you don't have to have the lockup function working in the torque converter. My K5 has been running wothout the lock up function for about 8 yrs and alot of those were on the street/Hwy.

I am not 100% sure but I think the converter lockup is only used in overdrive. Anyone know for sure?

Yes, and it is electronically controled. Theres a 4 pin plug on the side of the trans case that is used to engage the TCC solenoid. If you decide to use a converter clutch, you have to be careful that it disengages under moderate acceleration or it will burn up. Those little clutches in the converter don't have much holding capacity. Running a converter clutch will reduce operating temps at steady state hwy cruise because it stops the vanes in the torque converter from shearing the fluid and makes everything spin the same speed inside the converter. Of course if you overload the converter clutches and make them slip with a hot engine and big tires it'll burn the fluid really quick.
