My brother-in-law has a 1977 FJ40 that needs a transfer case. He knows nothing about it, other than it has a v6 with a manual transmission. Does anyone know what transfer case he needs, or possibly have one that they don't need anymore? He needs to get it fixed, because it is his only means of transportation. He lives in eastern washington and frequently travels the passes and snow is coming soon. Thank you for your help.

Is it the factory t-case? What is wrong with it? FJ40s came with a inline 6, v-6 would be custom.

It would be an inline 6, my bad. I have not seen the rig but he says that is original equipment with 88,000 miles on it. He needed a car because he is going through a divorce and a friend gave him a good deal on it. Any info would would be appreciated. He livesin the wenatchee area.

Any transfer case from a 75-82(?) FJ40 or 75-79 FJ55 will bolt right up. Sorry, I don't have one sitting around.

Any idea what's wrong with it? Unless it was abused and the case cracked, they just don't go bad that often. If it's just bearings, rebuild kits really aren't that expensive.

Do you happen to know the make and model? Ex: Dana 20 NP205

I don't know what is wrong with it but I am going to talk to my brother in law after work so that I can get some more info.

It's a Toyota Land Cruiser Transfer Case. It's not used in anything else. Technically, it's a Toyota J40 case (the name has nothing to do with the FJ40 vehicle model designation), but it's commonly referred to as a "4 speed" case since it came behind 4-speed transmissions. The pre-74 case was a J30, or "3-speed" case.
