Alright, a friend of mine (non rock crawler) is about to buy some new shoes for his 07 new gen., crew cab, 4x4, Duramax. He has the 17" rims on it and has been asking me tire questions since I have an obsession with tires. I have a 2006 2500HD crew cab but it's the 6.0L gas burner which is a little lighter than the D'max...but I am running 8 ply Cooper Discoverer S/T's on it and love them. I have had a set of Coopers before and they wear like iron and always ride good....from my experience anyway. He has a set of 285 BFG AT's on there now with supposedly 15k miles or so and they are wore pretty good, lot more than I'd expect from only 15k miles. He does not tow often with his truck, but occasionally has to pull a trailer full of stuff from A to B. He's just looking more at longevity of the tire. I told him if my 8 ply Coopers look like his 10 ply BFG's do now when I get 15k miles on them, I'm gonna be pissed. He also may have miscalculated exactly how many miles he has on them too.

Anyway, what's you guys' opinions on running a 8 ply or 10 ply tires on a 3/4 ton truck? I know if you are doing any heavy hauling like farm equipment on a deckover gooseneck trailer, it would be obvious to run 10 plies, so let's set the standard here at the most to be towed being my bumper pull dual axle 18 ft. dovetail trailer with my Tacoma on it...just for topic comparison purposes.

I'm sure he's wanting to go back with a 285/70/17 size as well...and I know there's alot of brands that don't make that tire in the all terrain they offer. He's trying to decide which tire brand to go with and is sketchy on the Coopers bc the S/T doesn't come in a 10 ply. :drinkers:

If it was me, 10 ply and be done with it. I believe in the "I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it" train of thought.

Derail, my buddy has those Cooper tires on his Nissan hardbody and drives it about 60 miles a day for work and he hunts out of it too. They have been on there for about 3 years and I would doubt seriously if they have more than 20% worn off of them. Incredible wear for a truck tire, but I kinda think they have a butt ugly tread pattern. My BFG all terrins were very dissapointing for the mileage I got out of them (maybe 35k on a 1/2 ton GMC) and I won't buy another set.

Yea I was suprised when he said he only had like 15k miles on them. Really the only 8ply thing here is like my situation was when I was deciding on tires. I love the S/T tread pattern, and that was the tire I wanted...however they don't make it in a 10 ply or that would've been what I'd have chose. Really the BFG AT and the Cooper Discoverer AT are the two only all terrain tires I'd consider running on my truck that I can think of...I don't know of any other tire that would look as good, or that I'd like.

Surely those bfgs have more than that on them they usually wear awesome, but yes go 10 ply and I love my terras on my 1/2 ton but haven't ran them in 10 ply but bet Tgey would do good

I have been running 8ply on a dodge dually bfg at 315/75/16 pulling trailers alot never had a problem and have been the best wearing tire ,just put second set on

I started to put 315's on my truck but I didn't want to kill the power and even more gas mileage so I just went with 285's.

And for the Terra Grapplers, there's just something about the tread on them that makes me just hate that tire all together for some reason. The Trail Grappler M/T comes in a 10 ply too and if I had it to do over, I would have went with them. I have a friend running 35/12.50/20 Trail Grapplers on his 06 crew cab Duramax and they have worn very well since he's had em.

Speaking of tow rigs and such. Saw our Toy on the trailer at MSORP this weekend but not your tow rig. Hell I'm not sure I even saw you. :dunno:

P.S. glad you specified tires in the thread cause I was thinking plywood on a tow rig, :****:

O and yeah 10 ply or E rated is the way to go. U use 12 ply aka F rated on my trailer. Here is a chart that maybe useful.

Load Range Ply Rating Max Load Pressure
B 4 35 psi (240 kPa)***
C 6 50 psi (350 kPa)***
D 8 65 psi (450 kPa)***
E 10 80 psi (550 kPa)***
F 12 95 psi (650 kPa)***
