85 toy with 35" bfg. Brakes are stock and do not work very well. what is the best way to up date the brakes. I use this for pulling my small boat and pulling Boonie Buster back home.:haha: :redneck: :stirpot:

First off you have the smallest booster they ever put on a yota.. Dump it for a later model V6 booster it is a direct bolt on replacement. While you are doing that put a V6 master on it. It will be aluminum with a 1" bore so it'll be easy to pick out at a yard.

Now grab some cruiser rotors anything from 76-91 will work just fine. Grab some V6 calipers off of a mini truck too and you'll have some damned good brakes. :D

No. Most aftermarket wheels will clear them just fine. I ground the calipers just a bit beings they have 3 cooling fins near the wheel mounting surface that can interfere. Other than that they are a direct replacement. Get an ifs axle under the back with it's bigger brakes and you'll have some serious stopping power.

Thank for the info. I need to start picking up parts befor I reck this thing. Do you no if the 90's 4runner with 22re have the bigger brakes or not?

yep. you need the rear end, and the calipers off it:awesomework:
then the fj rotors

dont rebuild your truck just cuz the brakes suck. first, adjust the rears and make sure there is some shoe left. I have seen a ton of toys with almost no rears. Then get some v6 calipers and vented rotors.

THE CALIPER UPGRADE IS ONLY WORTH A **** IF NEW PARTS!!!!!! ALL TOYOTA USED CALIPERS ARE JUNK, REPEAT JUNK!!!!

the only reason I ever upraged to venteds was not for MORE brakes but to stop warping the rotors, which are usually warped by stuck calipers dragging making a ton of heat.

stock toy brakes work just fine if they are in good mechanical working condition.

Hmm so every time I drive my truck I should replace the calipers? Afterall once I step on the brake pedal that makes the calipers used and you said it yourself used calipers are junk...

I'd say if the rig hasn't sat for too long and the brake system is still sealed then toss the used calipers on there... Mine came off of a wrecked truck that sat for almost a year but the system was still sealed. They haven't failed me yet. :D

same here. mine came of a rolled(on the hi-way) truck, it set long enough to sieze the motor... and ive been running them for atleast 3 years now.

Good info. Why the cruiser rotor? Do the V6 calipers not work with mini truck rotors? The cruiser rotor's cool better?

The rears are down. but the front are bad need replaced. I just needed to no what works best.

just so were clear, you need the IFS *CALIPERS*(thanks WT) basically 86-95, 4cyl or v6.
fj rotors are vented, as apposed to the solid rotor thats on there now.
they fit PERFECTLY with the IFS calipers.

so no, the IFS calipers wont work with the solid rotors.

Fixed for clarification.

Darby as said before it's all about the thickness of the rotor. The stock solid axle rotor is solid and about 1/2" thick. The cruiser rotor is about 5/8" thick and vented just like ifs rotors those calipers came on. Technically you can run a cruiser caliper up to about 92 on a solid axled rig but I think only 60/62 and 80 are the larger caliper like the V6 mini's

So as long as it's IFS, V6 or not, those caliper's and rotors should be a decent upgrade? I had trouble keeping my truck stopped in place over at funny rocks. And only the V6 rear has the bigger drums on the rear?

Yes any ifs caliper will bolt in place. Look at any 4 cylinder stock caliper and you can see that it has 2 small and 2 large pistons. The V6 calipers have 4 large so they have more surface area to hold tension.

ANY ifs housing will have the large brakes. 4 cylinder or V6 it make's little difference. Only thing to watch out for is the year. 86 is an orphan, it has a different wheel cylinder than the later stuff.

Thank you. I'll be taking your advice
