A buddy of mine has an 86 22re that is idleing bad. Once it is warmed up it will idle drops down then back up to normal then back back down, back up, and back down etc...................

Here is more info.
Any ideas? :corn:

If it is EFI lower the idle below 900. Bet that takes care of it.

Yes, it is fuel injected.

He has the idle set at 750 when it is operating right. When it acts up the idle drops and then rises back to 750 then back down, back up.......................

He had to replace the thermal sensor and the TPS just recsently. Also had to adjust the air/fuel mixture setting that is located under the little cap. He did all this to get it through emissions. The header caused it to fail.

Could adjusting the air/fuel setting be the cause? Which way does he turn the screw to get what mixture?

He has also tried pulling codes. It reads nothing.

Maybe a dumb question, but...

When he replaced the TPS did he set it up correctly? As in, checking the resistance against the FSM specs at various gaps?

Niether he or I know anything about this. Could you explian how to do that?

The mechanic at the Toyota place told him to set it at some certian gap and it should be fine.

What year is the engine. I can scan & e-mail the procedure to you if I have the fsm for that year(which I probably do). I would be willing to bet the TPS is the culprit now that you have shared the above info.

I'll search around and see if I can find the info from when I did my buddy's TPS. In the mean time, I'd take up notstock on his offer.

Looks like everything you need is in that link. Double check settings after you tighten the screws, I have had them change after they are tightened. Be very carefull to set it correctly, you will have problems if it is not set correctly. A little movement of the TPS body will change the setting a lot.
