Well I finaly have a part going out in my drive train, the rear u-joint. So the question is what do I need to get to fix it? the book says just replace bearings but that dosnt seem right.

What parts should I get, need to get all the parts before starting replacement, its my only rig.

You will need a u-joint, a wrench, and a hammer or press.

Toyota calls u-joints, bearings. Factory replacement joints from a Toyota dealer are better than aftermarket parts. I paid about $60. each.

You go to your local parts dealer and say. . . Hi, I'm looking for a ujoint for the rear of my toyota yr model etc. . . then you go home you remove your rear driveline, then you remove the clips retaining the caps then you take a hammer, and (i use a socket) use something to push on one side of the caps while you pund on the other side with your BFH!!!

Then once removed, spray alittle degreaser or cleaner and wipe it up all nice and clean, then remove bearing caps insert ujoint, put caps on, pound caps down to insert retaining clips, then insert clips, then reinstall driveline. . . . . . . NOW YOUR DONE:cheer:

I still dont get why pay double for a part, I am not going with the ultra cheap route, but paying double is hard for me to do, I am only running 31's I think i will break somthing else before I wear another joint out.

I was a little confused by the book, but sounds like a piece of cake, which is what I was thinking, thats what I get for looking at a book

It's not strength, it's longevity. You can always go to a junkyard and pull a used shaft, if it's not the same length just swap the joint into yours.

thanks Shane, looks like it should be an easy fix, or close to it, there is always a little heat to remove the old one too.

If you need heat you're doing it wrong, unlike my dodge's stupid glued in joints. Bfh :awesomework:

i just torch the bitches out. hammers and sockets take to much time

I don't use sockets until tapping the new caps in, I have a quicker way of hammering them out. I bet I can have one out faster my way than you with a torch. :flipoff:

well it went, bfh didnt do it :( ended up using a cutting wheel and a grinder to remove the joint in pieces.

so the 86 has internal c-clips(inside the yoke) is there an advantage to external clips that look kind of like "e"s? Toyota parts guys said it changed late 87, dont know what changed though?
