So I've found two issues with the new truck so far. Its an 86 22re efi. Any help is appreciated from you yoter people.

1. It stutters for a couple seconds when you first start it, some days its harder to start than others. Once its running it smooths out and runs perfect.

2. I drove it down the interstate the other day. 3 times the check engine light came on for about thirty seconds then shut off once I dropped below 70. The last time it happened I was doing 65, it came on for 30 seconds, shut off, then the temp gauge slowly went down until it stayed around 100*.

I originally thought it was Toyotas version of a governor because it came on at 75 the first couple times. Then once it happened at 65 and the temp gauge messed up then that threw my theory out the window.

i too am interested. mine doesnt like to start right up when the motor is cold and my engine light will sometimes come on when cruising at 'high speed' ::)

As far as the starting concern try cycling the key a couple times before you try and crank it. (Fuel pressure)
I would check the valve lash. (Compression)
Temp sending unit or connection could cause light and gauge problem.

light problem is a cat converter.. took the computer to it at the autoparts store

Re: Re: 86 Toyota issues.

Can you do that to an obd1? I thought you just had to count the blinking lights on the dash

did you notice a decrease in power when the check engine light was on?

might be a faulty knock sensor pulling timing?

Cold start issue is most likely something to do with the cold start injector its the little injector in the top intake manifold and the temp sensor that controls it is one of the two under the throttle body. The temp sensor is horizontal and points toward the radiator. One is green one is black. I had this isuue a while back.
You can research it on pirate or just google it. They have all kind of problems out of the cold start system.

once, but very little. Could have just been a hill. Lol

Pull the EFI fuse and reset the ECM. Drive it and see what codes it stores when the CEL comes back on.

My bad. I've been slammed this weekend. We are moving Friday so I've barely had time to take a leak. I pulled the fuse earlier. But I haven't gotten the check engine light to come back on yet. As of right now, it only happens at high speeds.

Re: Re: 86 Toyota issues.

You pull fuse it resets ecm. Drive until cel comes on then pull codes.

Re: Re: 86 Toyota issues.

I can't get the cel to come back on to save my life. So I guess thats fixed. Haha

As for starting, I've decided that once the motor is warmed up, it has no problem at all starting. Makes me think its the cold start injector. I think rjhoward hit the nail on the head. I'll work on it next week. Too busy moving this weekend. Closing on my first house tomorrow. Flashemifyagotem!

mine does the same thing. when the motor is cold it takes a few seconds for it to start, when warm it fires right up. ive replaced starter, battery, and the cold start injector and still not any better. i talked to one of the toyota mechanics and he said its pretty common issue and a new cold start timing switch will usually fix it... but thats a $200 part
