Its pretty common.  The ones that I like, and are less common, are the ones where they hide the alternator like the starter.  And swap the pulley off for gears, and us the flywheel to spin it.  Its done so the front of the engine is uncluttered, and typically on rods no running hoods. 


The flywheel one charges all the time.  The ones on the driveshaft only charge when you are moving.  So if you end up doing a lot of slow cruising, you'll have to take a few hot laps down some side streets to get your juice back up.
