I read in one of the build threads( cant remember which one), that if it is a dually 14 bolt, there is enough tube, that you wont have to retube it. Starting to get parts for a buggy build and I know where a dually axle is I can grab cheap, and if I didn't have to retube, that would be great. Thanks for any help.

I could be wrong but I kinda think the SRW housings are the widest. Most of the difference between the srw, van, dually etc. is in the hubs. I see a lot of guys just cutting one side down and sleeving the leftover on the other side.

I only retubed passenger side

I used a dually axle on a build, and would up retubing it. Early 90's finned housing. It looked wide enough, but after looking at the spindles I decided it was a bad idea. From the brake backing plate mount out to the spindle, the wall thickness was thinner than the rest of the tube. It looked to me like that the whole end of the axle from the brake flange out was pressed onto the axle tube.

Thanks for the help, I will just return the long side, I'm planning on a pass. drop with solid inner c's and probably stock knuckles and hubs for now

Keep in mind, the pinion is offset something like 6" to the driver's side so pass drop 14's tend to put the driveshaft really close/ into the oil pan and starter. It's not impossible but packaging is easier with a drivers drop.

Thanks for info, I am planning on a 6.0 vortec, the guy that is going to help me build chassis said because of oil pan placement and oil filter a pass drop would do better on ls style motors. If you have any more info would be great. Thanks for your help

The only other thing I can share is when I measure my 14b I've got about 12.5" from the center of the pinion to where the inside of the link mount would be. On my sd60 I'll have about 8". This means the pinion of the 60 is roughly 4.5" farther from the engine centerline than a 14b would be and I'm not sure yet if I can run a 1 piece ds. Clearance of the bellhousing is probably going to be what dictates that, not to mention links and such.

Here's the view from the pinion looking back to the transfer case. I flipped the pic to help illustrate. Figure with a 14b front, the pinion will be about 4.5" further to the right. This is with a 6.0, th400 and atlas.

Like I said, I'm sure it's possible but you'll need to be considerate of all of your clearances.
Now for the disclaimer, I've never built a 14b front. I was planning on it but for the sake of time and $$$ I abandoned it for the time being. I did do quite a bit of research and my opinions are mostly derived from that. Whatever you do, post pics... we like pics. :dblthumb:

Thanks for the help, soon as I get started I will start posting pics, it will be slow build since I'm not rich.

Another question. Trying to build this as cheap as possible, new inner c's, stock knuckles till they break, stock hubs. I have a friend that is going to retube it for me. On the axle shafts, do I need 40 spline or will 35 or stock work?

A lot of people are runnin 30 spline inner Rcv 300 m that fit 14b carrier and not having issues . Huge hp like 600-700 then you might have issues but 90% of people won't have problems with 30 spline inner and 35 outer 300m Rcv , I'm building a 14b right now with this setup

Thanks for the input guys, I'm only going to have a 6.0 with cam and tune so 450hp, it's going to be a budget build, most likely run Yukon with super joints, I will upgrade parts, when I break the stock stuff, it's alot easier to only have to buy on part here or there, instead of buying it all at once.

I considered haveing a set of Yukons cut 30 spline and run the Yukon stock outers for this build to save some money for the customer however he broke one before and I feel it's just moving the weak link of the lp60 ring and pinion to the shafts when installed in a 14b. So he's ponying up and getting the rcvs now instead of the custom inner yukons , yukons are a weird animal, I've seen em hold up and take a beating and I've seen em snap from hardly anything ...
