Anyone have experience with a dt466???

X2 on reliability. The DT466 is the workhorse of the medium duty world. A buddy told me once that they need to be rebuilt after relatively low miles (200k or so). I find that hard to believe though. However, if its true in frame rebuilds are relatively affordable at about $3000 if you can find a diesel tech doing side work.

Good to hear... Thanks...

Maybe I'll swing it by them to have it checked out...

I runs good with only 97,000 miles on it... But, you never know what the typical issues are unless you have experience with it... So, thought I'd ask...

Oh ya, I forgot to mention that the DT466 and DT466e seem to be the most common engine for tow trucks. Just think of the abuse they go through responding to WSP calls with short timelines and cold starts etc. International must have done something right or there would be more Cummins engines between the rails.

A 466 in a Superduty is what Ford should have done in the first place.
You can easily tell a 466 from a 466e by looking at the injection pump. I'm guessing that the e in 466e means electronic as in the fuel system being electronically managed. There should be a badge somewhere on the hood showing the engine model number. Wikipedia has a page on the DT466 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navistar_DT_engine. If you end up getting the rig it would be sweet if the engine is a 466 that way you can easily mod and repair the fuel system.

I just did some looking around and it seems they started putting out the 466e in '04...

This is a '93, so it should be a true dt466...

Yep, the DT466E has a huge solenoid block on the inj. pump and a wide flat composite valve cover. The older DT466 has either a tin or cast alum and very narrow v/c. Plus a mechanical pump.

The biggest, in terms of most often, problem with the dt466 is that there water pumps go kinda quick, not bad to replace and cheap to do, just you should know to keep an eye on temps....
3-400000 miles is normal for an in frame.
