My Atlas II 3.0 developed a weird noise yesterday. Any time the fr. axle is in, no load, there's a gear type noise like something isn't fully engaged or something. I can feel it in the fr. axle shifter. On acceleration and deceleration it's fine, no noise, just the transition area when there's NO load. Make sense? So on the throttle, or downshifting nothing. But if you roll on and off the throttle, as it goes through no load, it makes the noise. The fluid in the sight tube looks good, this t-case only has maybe a couple hundred miles on it.

Any ideas? Haven't had a chance to call the guys @ AA yet.

Thanks, John

Real cold weather can make a T case be a little slow to engage and disengage, I have had problems with the 241 in my XJ going from 2wd to 4wd the last few days, just a thought.

Nah, it's not an engagement problem. It's shifting flawlessly, and this is well after it's warmed up.

My tranny in my diesel has been a lot louder when coasting since the weather has gotten cold.

Maybe throw some thinner oil in it or some Lucas

This is a fairly loud, gear type sound. Repetitive like teeth chattering or something... not just a bearing howl or whine or something. And this is after driving it like 20-30 miles, it's plenty warm.

The Dana 20 in Crystals rig did that every once in awhile, coasting down hill it would do it, or when letting off the gas. Hasn't done it since we swapped the new axles/ drivelines in it, maybe it has something to do with u-joints?

I'm gonna shake it down real quick tomorrow. It's ALL new stuff though, and nothing has changed, the noise just started.

Through out the years I have had odd issues with my Atlas, noise like you describe, popping out of gear, tough to engage- dis-engage ........

Everytime it has ben linkage adjustment....sometimes just a hair off. Once I was so concinced it had a bent shift rail that I pulled it apart, nothing was wrong....just a linkage adjustment.

Have a Dana 300 in a YJ that made a noise simailar to as you describe. Also have a Dana in a Flattie that does also. In the YJ I found a difference in the yoke angles. Corrected it so they were closer to the same. No noise now. The same problem is in the flattie but would be more difficult to solve. The flattie does not see much high range 4x4 action so I live with it. I figure as you coast the yoke rattles around looking for center. With a load it is held more firmly. But just theory on my part. Perhaps in your little use things have loosened up enough to have a break in slop establish.

My cj makes a noise like that, only on no load with the front engaged, it is a steep front driveshaft angle on mine, need a reverse cut diff to stop it.

Mine is pretty flat, and it's a HPD60 front. I don't think I'll have much paying work tomorrow, so I'll check it all out.
