I picked up a D60 frontend last weekend, and I am slowly tearing it down because it needs to be rebuilt (seals, breaks, u-joints, gears, locker, etc.).

I am planning to have gears installed this winter sometime (no money to do it now since I just spent it all on the axle). My question is, can I go ahead and pull the gears, and carrier now or should I leave them in there? Will who ever installs my gear set need the stock gears left in there for some sort of measurements? I've never done gears so I don't know.

Thanks...

yes leave them there. sometimes dana spicer gives you the shimmimng required for the setup etched right into the pinon. there will be a dimention something like this ( +.002). there is a conversion chart that gives you the setup shimming required if the new set is marked.

if original was marked (+.002) and new is marked (-.001) then you go to the chart and look up the new and old dimentions and the chart tells you exactly what shims to start with.

when these dimentions are present it is a breeze to set up. the three i have done came out exactly perfect the very first time and to this day are the three best patterns i have done.

this is the main reason i hate aftermarket gear sets. they are just not done with the proffesionalism i am used to seeing in products these days.

as long as you dont throw anything away the installer should be able to reference off the current parts. But feel free to take it apart.
