So there is a crack forming at the base of a link mount on the rear axle. The crack is in the axle material it self, so the weld fill material is attached to the mount and is pulling out of the axle. The crack is about 1/2" long.

Using a 220 MIG, how should I prep the crack for repair? Should I weld it as hot as possible, melt the **** out of it, or turn it down and start at one end and slowly work the puddle throught the crack?

Grind out as much of the old weld as possible down to clean bare metal...past the crack.

Being that it is cracked it has allready allowed dirt in and rust to form which if unremoved before re-welding will cause contamination/purosity.

After you have completely cleaned out the original weld just re-weld it as you would normally.

Don't really have a suggestion for you without seeing, other than drill out the ends of the crack to stop it and weld it up. Curious though, how thick are your mount brackets. Can you get a pic of the crack?

I was assuming toy axle...

Oh toylet axles...

step 1) find all welds on toylet axle housing
step 2) grind all welds out
step 3) put axle housing in scrape pile
step 4) weld DANA, Rockwell or Unimog axle back into place.
:haha:

Why do I get this sneaking suspicion I'm going to be looking for 60s sooner than I planned? :redneck:

Once a toy housing starts to splinter (those are not cracks) its done--throw it away or truss over it.....

You could just weld that bracket in place, but it's not just a simple weld it up fix, that bracket is pulled quite a bit foreward, I would replace the housing idealy, but if you're gonna have to stay with the housing due to time, I would at minimum completely cut off the link bracket, repair the tube, then install a new bracket.

right now I need the bandaid. Sarge found me a free axle housing somewhere. I've been meaning to replace it since its also horribly bent. I'm guessing I will just go to 60's though, I cant see doin all the work to fab in a toyota axle. When I do, I'll get someone else to weld the brackets on:awesomework:
