How simple is this to do? Can I go to the cop shop and have one ran as a civilian? There are tons of online places, but it seems a bit shady. I just need a SS# is all I imagine to check out my new tenant. That and a contract.

well for jobs, we check all of their references. Look them up and call. Call their previous employers, etc. Our HR does use a background service, but we usually dont do that unless we are gettting ready to draft up an offer letter as its pretty expensive and takes several days.
