belt tension?

I bought a belt for my buggy. I did a custom route sbc 383 the belt I got it tight to the touch but the tensioner is maxed out so it will not make it any tighter so I called an I can get a belt 1/2 in shorter or 1 inch shorter. My question is if the belt I have it just too long as in tight enough to spin accessories but loose enough to slide off the tensioner pulley how much shorter should I go? How much difference will a 1/2 inch make through the system? Or should I go one inch if it will fit?

A half inch makes a big difference on belt length. It if looks pretty close now I would go with the half inch shorter belt. You are just trying to put tension on it at this point.
The tensioner just needs to not be maxed out.

If you can slide it off the pulley with your bare hands easily you may wanta go with an inch shorter
