birfields

more or less the "birfield" is the bell on the end of the inner axle. there is the inner axle short and long and outer axle.

exactly what is a birfield? is it the ball end on the axle housing, or is it the joint on the axleshaft?

I assume you didn't go thru the front end under your truck?

Um, he did an SAS on his truck. I'm assuming when that gets done, the joints get repaced as well?

Nope... Some guy he knows did the work and no idea if the guy went thru the diff. If he didn't it should have been gone thru...

Oops. :corn:

EVEN more so since the they put new high steer arms on---at the very least the pre-load checked/redone on the knuckle which requires pulling the spindle/axles to get a true pre-load reading.

first off, i trust john to do it right on my truck. we did a complete knuckle rebuild on it, and also cleaned out the axle housing while it was stripped down. i asked john a couple of questions about birfields, but he is a jeep guy, so he didnt know.

the reason i asked is because i have heard alot of talk about "exploding birfields", which makes me think the birf is a major weak point.

You installed a knuckle rebuild kit and you guys still don't know what a birfield is?? Not dogging "John's" work, but if you don't preload the trunion bearings, etc correctly like crash metioned on the toy knuckles, you will most likely have leaky balls  :D

The seals will ooze regardless over time, they're not perfect. The problem you will have, is destroying the trunnion bearings and/or breaking the studs if they're not setup properly.

does anyone have an exploded image of a toyota axle with labels? i am trying to learn about birfields, because something tells me its good stuff to know, and all these terms have me confused.

yea, i saw that when i was there to get the stickers. didnt really know what i was looking at. that was before i did any work on the truck.

Don't waste your time trying "understand" stuff.......like me. :flipoff: And just buy the Longfields and spend your newly found time wheeling......like me. :clappy:
