I happen to be right in the middle of and IP and LP job on an '02 that spit the PO216; removed the filter, and there was brass material in the housing from the failed LP, low psi under accel (3-4 PSI).Now as for the reason these IP's fail, it is technically due to the lack of fuel, which provides lubrication(if you call today's diesel lubricive ) and ultimately cooling for the IP....I guess it depends on how someone looks at it.... This job gets better-----HAS ANYONE EVER DONE THE INNER GEAR COVER GASKET DUE TO AN OIL LEAK? What a pita; pulling the cam in order to remove the cover--I really like Dodge's special tools for keeping the tappets up so you can pull the cam!!!:redneck: If you've got an oil leak at the front of the engine, look closely at the inner timing gear housing gasket......usually near the idler pulley the fan runs off of....
