What breaks in a Detroit locker when you snap an axle shaft? I heard its something simple and relatively cheap to fix.

I was loading my rig on the trailer yesterday and the front didn't want to climb up the trailer. Plus I'm hearing soem crazy noises from the front. I believe my locker may be broke.

It's one of the side pieces that the side gear mates too. Yes it's easy to fix once the locker is out. Price depends on what someone wants to sell the peice for.

I'm not 100% sure its broken, but the front sure is acting funny.

I put it in 4hi, on gravel, dumped the clutch and all 4 tires spun. But when turning I get some clunking noises and it didn't want to climb on my trailer. But eventually it did.

haha sorry. It's just a private joke between my wife and I. I always say broke and she says 'broken' immediately afterwards :D

Joop it is a easy fix once out....it will be a side gear if that is what they are called last ones I bought were 90-100 each for a d60 from randy's

The part is called a clutch and hold out ring assembly. Sometimes they also take out the middle section of the locker which is called a central driver. I should have a D44 set here. PM if interested.

Once I verify it. I'll get ahold of you. :awesomework:

When I snapped a shaft and broke my detroit, there were still 3 teeth left on the clutch, so it would grab only sometimes, NEVER under load.

Also, if you have a bent axle housing, it could either A) cause your detroit to act funny or B) lunch your detroit making it necessary to get a new one or parts.

I would pull it out and inspect, if there are naughty bits in your diff cover, you may have found your problem.

I have to run by there today. I might pull the cover because its getting replaced anyways.

X2 on the little square pieces=side gears

To clear this up....
The side gear is the part that the axle splines into. This is NOT the part that breaks causing the little square parts. The part that breaks is called a clutch and hold out ring assembly. If you ask for a side gear you will get the wrong part.

Alright took a peak at it this evening at Pat's. I'm about 99.99% sure the locker went BOOM. There was small metal fragments in the bottom of the diff. Justing (aka Bill) said slivers .. 1/4" size chunks are more than slivers. But the gears looked fine from what I could see. No scratches or pieces missing. I could see a small piece of something laying inside of the Detroit through one of the oil holes (??). So that's what puts me at 99.99% sure the locker went BOOM.

So whats the cost and availability of the parts I need?

That is true my bad.:awesomework:Also when putting back together use lots of grease and allthread with washers and wingnuts so you dont have to fight the springs and internal pieces if putting back together by yourself.

Make sure you get some turd polish while you are at it.:fawkdancesmiley:

he needs the high quality stuff! That turds gonna take some major polishin!:flipoff:

Hey now.. Those CV axle shafts are looking pretty tempting. I could probably sell my Alloys for $500, then scrounge up the other $700 for those puppies. Those would be the ultimate turd polisher.

and I'm not going to lie,, they do look pretty tempting. $1100 and my axle is stronger than a 60.

Just pushing the weak link to another part of the 1/2 ton axle Jon, and the axle as a whole will never be stronger that a Dana 60:;. Still have a weaker ring and pinion, ball joints, etc.. You will never learn I tell ya.:fawkdancesmiley::D

Ok I'm going to sell this sucker, give you the money to build me a 60. Gotta be driverside drop and ready to bolt in. :flipoff:
