When I snapped a shaft and broke my detroit, there were still 3 teeth left on the clutch, so it would grab only sometimes, NEVER under load.Also, if you have a bent axle housing, it could either A) cause your detroit to act funny or B) lunch your detroit making it necessary to get a new one or parts.I would pull it out and inspect, if there are naughty bits in your diff cover, you may have found your problem.
