Sultan Wa,
I just got a newer head for my motor and I had to put the cam back in it with new bearrings and I went to torque the last bolt down and I notice it was just turning and turning so I pulled it out and sure enough the threads were stripped out. I took the head to a friends house so his dad could re-thread it. He started to drill the hole out when all of a sudden the cap broke in half basicly. So my question is can I put a cap from a different head or put a different cam and set of caps off of a different head on the newer head?

line bore!!! aka you're F*CKED:mad: you can't put differents caps on because they are machined specifically for THAT bearing going in THAT direction/side. I can explain more in detail if i showed you.... saturday maybe.:corn:
you'll have to take out all the bearings and yes you'll have to find a new cap and have it taken to a machine shop and have a line bore done on it to even out all the holes, but then ( I think as was done on a rebuilt w/new crank I did) you have to get different bearings to account for the boring of the holes

what kind of engine is this???

I have replaced many a cam retainer cap on OHC engines... you just have to run a dial indicator in them to make sure they match up.. and yes if they are off you will have to line hone them out.

This was a regular thing on 22R's and such, it seemed that the people in the core yard tearing them down always found a way to lose a damn cap, or damage one real bad.

but just make sure that you are not only checking the top-to-bottom measurement, you have to check it all the way around the circle.:D

That is kinda what I figured but I was hoping somebody would say something easier that would work but I guess not. How much does the bore stuff cost to have done.

It is a 22r that I have to rebuild

my 2.8l Crank line bore was $50 but like zoeiaoediak said to make sure they match, and by match I mean MATCH!!!!! If it's off by a 1/8" you might want to do something different:haha: :fawkdancesmiley: (damn kids anyways:kissmyass: :redneck: )

Ok well I have another couple of questions. First, if I use the caps off the old head which are smaller in diameter than the newer head caps could I put the smaller caps on and have them machined to the original broken cap specs? And my second question would be where is a good machine shop that does quality work and is kinda close to Sultan/Monroe area?
