I've got a 81 toy with a 34/36 weber and c series offy intake, exhaust is a hooker header with 2 1/4 and flowmaster. That's all I've got right now for engine mods, but I plan to port/polish/gasket match the head, and go with 11 to 1 or 12 to 1 pistons when I rebuild the motor. Right now I am looking to buy a camshaft. I've looked at NWOR, Downey, LCE, and a couple others but I'm still unsure of what to get. All the numbers look comparable as far as duration/lift. I understand the princaple behind duration/lift, but considering they are all about the same should I just pick one and buy it? Is there a specific brand anyone can suggest? What kind of cams do you guys usually see run with a 22r and with what kind of results?

81 toy, 4" pro comp lift, 35" pro comp m/t's, soon to be 5.29 yukons, detroit rear, E-locker front, truck mostly sees trails, snow, and mud, I highly doubt it will ever see rocks. :masturbanana[1]:

firts i HAVE to say.... 11:1 on an r engine is pushing it.
12:1 is race fuel.
268 c crawler cam from engnblder is pretty good.

x2 and you can't go wrong with LCE except they're pretty pricey. If at all possible stay away from NWOR, crappy service...

Do a basic rebuild on the block. And for the higher compression ratio, just get a 20r head with the crawler cam. The intake/exhaust is a good start. I wouldn't go above 10.1 compression, unless you can afford race gas or at least supreme everytime you go the pump.

Hell, I got a 22re turbo I'll sell ya, just needs a rebuild! That will give ya 143 hp! :awesomework:

I know Keith Black sells 11:1 pistons, and I found the 12:1 pistons on LCE, I knew the 11:1 pistons would be a step up from stock but I guess I didn't consider haveing to run premium all the time. I had considered the 12:1 pistons because once my truck becomes solely a trail rig I could swap over to pan. which would benefit from the high comp pistons, but that was just an idea.

I considered swaping to a 22re but I've already got $800-$900 into this motor and I figured I would stick with it. Instead of swaping out to another motor I would end up rebuilding anyways. ($500 carb, $230 intake, and $180 header)

A 22re turbo does sound all sophisticated and stuff though. how much are you looking to sell that for?

Why don't you just take your cam to Delta and have them grind it to your specs?

I figured it would be easier to buy a cam and have it sent to me. That way I can put it on the bench till I get around to replaceing it.

Do they have specs you can choose from or do you just have it ground to the same specs as the cams that other people sell?

$500 for the whole 22rte setup, will need all the efi tank and lines but from afm to exhaust it's there! Just need a wiring harness.

Have you thought about propane, higher octane rating and clean burning.

You can basically choose your specs. They'll either give you a ground cam and take yours as a core, or grind yours if they don't have one in stock. They usually do a stage1, 2, 3, but if you want custom I bet you could talk them into it.

I thought about doing the 22rte swap, and that might be a bigger project than I am really willing to commit to right now. I had considered switching to propane. That was the main reason I was looking at building a high compression motor.

Thanks for the info on delta cam. I'll keep that in mind, but after looking at the engnebuilder site I saw that they have everything you would need to rebuild an engine. Minus the pistions and a couple other parts. When I rebuild my engine I'll probably look at buying my parts through that site.

Right now I'm in Iraq, but I will be in the states for R&R in March. Originally I was thinking to buy a cam and install it when I get back. After thinking about it for awhile I think I'll hold off till this summer when my contract is up. That way I can rebuild the whole motor at once instead of doing a cam now and then doing the head/block work later. Thanks for the info though. :awesomework:
