My tow rig is a 79 Chev C30 and the Quadra jet is tired. What CFM would be a good replacement for fuel mileage and original power?I was looking at carbs with 600 or 650 CFM.Do you think 600 would be good or go up some?

What engine??? Is the motor in question built at all??? More details needed!!!
If you can find someone that knows the Q-jets well, and can go thru yours and get it dialed for your motor, you'll be better off, as they were a spread bore, meaning smaller primaries than your run of the mill aftermarket carb (better mileage)...not to mention they have the ability to flow more if needed (~800 cfm IIRC)....

A 600 (I love the Edelbrock I have on my car) would work fine for a stock smallblock, but like everyone else has said, if the Q-Jet worked well enough before I'd rebuild it.

It is a small block 350 that is stock. The Q jet has been rebuilt a few times, can a carb be rebuilt too many times or is there bushings that are replaced to eliminate moving parts wear?I was looking at the 600 cfm Edlebrock performer and I that cfm works I might run with it.

If you find a carb shop that knows Q-jets well (and yours hasn't been butchered up any thru its last overhauls), they will have all the stuff to properly rebuild these...meaning yes, they will have the reamer to rebush the base plate...There was a guy up here in Whatcom Co (Sutton Carburaetion (sp)) that knew these carbs in and out, and was the king of dialing these in, but he has moved on to bigger and better things, as the carb rebuilding business just ain't what it used to be 5-10 yrs ago....

yha, keep the qjet, get the base bushed. as allready said, the small primarys will get youmuch better throttle responce and economy than any square bore could dream of.
