hey guys yet again my bucket needs help and i turn to you all! basicly i recently drove my truck about 100 miles 50 miles both ways strait. the truck ran fine. however i noticed durring stop and go traffic that at about 2300 rpms ill get this rattling sound like a chain. me being a newb that iam first thought crap i hope thats not my timing chain but i dont really know anything except i know my truck has one. the motor doesnt spitter or sputt it is just this chain sound. i dont really know anything with the organs of an engines insides any thoughts would be appreciated! thank you very much.

Could be either the timing chain tensioner, or the pulley bearing for the idler if you have power steering. I had a similar noise in my 22re, thought it was the timing chain, so I replaced all that and the noise didn't go away... turns out it was the bearing in the idler/tensioner for the PS belt. Something to think about... if you have power steering, just pull the belt off and drive around the block and see if the noise is still there or not.

hmm no PS... i was thinking what about valve adjustment? do they(valves) cause this kinda noise? if so can i still drive around town and how long? thanks all!

How many miles on the truck? I would lay odds the tensioner isnt able to take up the slack in the chain, Or the tensioner is worn out. Look up enginbuilder on Pirate for a good deal on a t-chain set..You should take care of it sooner than later, If run for long enough the chain will wear a hole in the front cover and allow coolant to get in yer oil.

i wouldn't worry about a 20R's guides or chains -- it's a double chain setup with steel guides, they can slap for decades with no problem.

my 20/22R hybrid makes a wierd "buzz" at about 2000RPMs. i never have figured out what it is.

As long as it has the origional motor. More times than not I have seen newer motors swapped in. But yes it sounds like something in the front cover....

yes its originle 20r. so what do you mean front cover. mainly im showing my newbness at motors. one of my friends is a mechanic he said it might be a rod that has been bent. anyone else have any thoughts on that? i sure hope not.

Something in the front cover aka timing chain/tensioner--something along those lines.

Rods just dont "bend" out of the blue...

thanks crash. yeah its def a 20r so i think ill go get a valve adjustment a lot of the guys are telling me to over on pirate. now is the time to wonder how much it will cost and where to get it done.
