Lookin to get a chain saw. Only really lookin at stihl but what model to get?

ms 250, 260, 270 ,280?

What do you have or have had and how do you like it?

Will probably carry it in the rig as well as some home use.

they were selling a nice 18" poulan at costco for about $160.00 not a bad deal and just the right size. Sthills are great saws but overpriced because of the name. If you are using it for a living then great but for everything else nawww too much money. (imo) and I used to make a living with one.

being a loger im by saws all day...we run 575XP Husqvarna's and MS 440 STIHL the MS 440 is 70CC and the 575XP is 73.5CC both dont play both are a life time saw you pay for it 1 time and 1 time only....

You can't go wrong with a Stihl or a husky. I've had both. The little 18" older husy I've got is a ballsy little bitch.

Parts would probably be easier to find anywhere for the Stihl though.

I have 2 Stihls, wouldn't buy anything else. One I have had for 10 years, never had a problem. Cut many tons of wood with that thing.

I have the 280, and wouldn't buy anything smaller than that, remember that Stihl moved the 0 to the end, the 280 used to be the 022, and the 044 is now the 440, the 280 will fit comfortably behind the rear seat of a TJ. I used to use Husky's when I was logging, this is actually my first stihl and I am very pleased with it, Stihl motor mounts are stronger than the Husky, both are great saws though. The 280 will do most everything that you want it to as a casual user, I wouldn't recommend it if you are using it on a daily basis, it is a little small for that, but I am used to a 32" bar so I may be a little tainted on my view.

By no means will it be for daily use but I may get a firewood permit and would use it for cuttin rounds and hackin up fallen branches in the yard instead of having an illegal fire in the springtime:D. Also while wheelin last winter I coulda used one a few times but didn't have one with me. Thanks for the feedback

I bought a Stihl 036 pro 6 years ago, it was spendy, but it rips, haven't had to do anything but sharpen the chains. Clean the air filter after you use it. I cut between 6-8 cords a year, hope this helps.

i have the stihl 028 and an old 044 both great for there intended usage, the 028 seems to big to carry in the wheeler, picked up a 5 dollar little homelight at a garage sale this summer, fixed it(25.00) and carry it with me in the wheeler, the homelight also serves branch duty at home....

Thats what i'm talking about:clappy:

Seems like western WA guys prefer Stihl and eastern WA guys prefer Husky. I'm sure there are plenty of exceptions, point is both have a good rep. I bought a Husky and use it for what you're looking to buy one for, low use, carry in rig, and it works great.

in over 20 years ive used everything from a homelight to a stihl and from a husky to a milwaukee. when cutting for 16 hours a day i perfer a stihl because they had the least amount of problems, easy to maintain and pretty easy to rebuild in the field.

the husky's are great for small jobs. ive had to take my husky in more times then i would like to admit.

the milwaukee was my tree topping saw. wasnt too shabby but at the time i had to make due with what was given to me.

homelights....well they are cheap.

i work for a construction drilling company and we use a stihl ms 390, for cutting anything wood related. we beat the unholy hell out of it, toss it in the mudd, dirt, gravel, sand.....etc. it always starts up. use stihl oil in it. great tool.

also use a TS 460 STIHL Cutquik for metal cutting needs. gets treated the same

I talked to a bunch of lifetime foresters before I bought my saw, Stihl is the ONLY way to go. As for what model, I wouldn't go below what I got but you'll have to wait til daylight for me to tell you cause I forgot and it's pouring out. :redneck:

[edit] It's the 280, and I have a 20" bar on mine.

That is very true, I grew up logging in eastern Wa, and we used to laugh at guys who brought Stihls into the woods, but when I came over hear they laughed at my Husky. It is all a matter of preferance, I do have a stihl now, only because there are more dealers and it was easier to get parts for, but I think the two are pretty good, Husky's are a little lighter, but the Stihl's have better motor mounts.

I don't know the history of Husq's as well, but keep in mind that Stihl has been in the small engine business since they started. They build their own motors, they know their chit, and it lasts. Very few other companies can say this.

i beat on my stihl all the time, it will cut anything with a 20" bar, skip tooth chain, ive cut oak, pine, fir, maple, just about anything around here. ive run the bar out of oil and the motor. ive broken chains. hit tree spikes. the thing is a beast. ive never had to replace anything but the plug and the chain. other than that its great

i got a 260 pro, but i might get a farm boss, its a little heavier but it will definatly go through anything on the trail.

u could be a real man and get a double bit axe.
