99% sure i will be going to a SBC in my CJ5 and looking to go with a SM465 or SM420.

as far as tcase i am going to go with a D300

are the 420's too hard to get parts for these days?

Either one won't need parts--they just don't break....
 
Parts aren't that tough to find for a 420. But no matter what you do, you're still talking about a tranny that's 40+ years old and wasn't that smooth to begin with. Mine howls like a pissed-off banshee because I swapped a couple gears during my rebuild.

I think a NOS military replacement may be in my future (you just have to have the correct top cover and shifter stalk) since they're pretty cheap.



All that said, if I had to do it over again, I'd go with a 465 for the better shifting.
 
I had a 1975 Chevy truck for over 15 years and I never once changed the oil in the SM465 :redneck: and it took me all over the US and Canada it was a great truck.

To bad GM doesn't make them like that any more :booo:

i am not too concerned about smooth shifting i have a granny gear T18 right now
