I was looking at a electric winch but decided to run a hydraulic instead and have a few questions. I have a 79 chevy k10 and ive seen people tap into the power steering pump to run the winch but havent found any answers on how to do it, so how do you tap into the power steering pump while still maintaining full steering function? Do i need to buy an aftermarket one or what? Anything will help.

Why would you go Hydraulic? They're slow as hell, plus if you stall the rig, or it quits running---NO WINCH!!!! I realize you could lose an electric, but the chances of all electrical power are slimmer IMO--at least you'd have something to save your butt in a pinch if needed--IE: a rollover! If you roll and have hydro winch, your not gonna be able to run the motor if self-recovery is necessary...

Return your hydro winch and buy an electric one. Doubt anyone on here will say different. :;

bring me an electric winch that will remove my rockwells and 53s from the mud over 20 times in a weekend and not need solinoids, batteries, cables/conections.:booo:

electric winches are nice and all, but unless recovering yourself when dead or rolled over, they suck.

theres a reason rigs that use a winch everyday are PTO/HYDRO, they kickass all day long. do you think the fishermen on deadlies catch would rely on electric winches. what about your local rollback tow truck, PTO all day long.

90% of a winches life will be spent pulling other folks anyways. I prefer a PTO style, but I am a minority.

i can speak for that. when i was UPSIDE DOWN. i had an electric winch. and i had the ONLY winch in the group, at the time. im glad i did.

to the OP, not sure on exactly HOW u tap into it. but have heard, u DONT have power steering, WHILE winching. its either one or the other, but not both simultaneously.

I respect your preference brad, but think about all the examples of PTO/Hydro you stated--- all completely different situations than wheelin-I agree that PTO/hydros have their places, but when your 53"/Rockwell-shod rig is on it's lid, the chances are it'll be an electric that rights it, cuz you gots no winch!!!...and yes they do make electrics that'll pull your junk, you're just too cheap to pony up the dough!!!:fawkdancesmiley:

See what you started!!!:haha: Welcome to the Mayhem!!:cheer:
And yes, I had a buddy that had a MM10K Hydro, and he either had the winch, or the steering, but not both...I have heard of some people running a separate, dedicated winch pump...but if the rig dies for any reason, still no winch..:booo: I'm sure someone like PSC, or POS, might have a pump that's up to the task, but I'd seriously reconsider your winch choice, especially for a wheeling environment..your choice though!:awesomework:

very true and I agrre with all of you guys on the electric winches advantages.

just the guy had to have a reason to think hydro. I get 15000# warn 24v winches all the time. I dont want to run one. the army replaced them with hydro units for a reason, = reliability, power.

would you loan your electric to an idiot? NO they might burn it up if stalled. the hydro units are run daily by stupid army privates and they do not come through the trash at all.

and kev, my truck has a 20,000pto waiting to be installed in the rear where it can spend 90% of its life pulling others/hulks/crap around the shop.

on my 5ton I have a pto for the front and a hydro for ther rear.

AND ON MY TOYOTA I HAVE A ELECTRIC WINCH THAT IS BURNED UP. only the third one so far. by the way did I mention Im not into maintanence. I dont feel I should have to tear apart my electric $800 winch just as often as a 300dollar HF special just cuz I wheeled in some rain and mud. but hey the PTO I just bought off of CL for a hundred bucks is 30 years old and works great, still.

dont skidders spend thier life in the woods? never seen one with terminals on the spool.
but most folks dont have the same needs as I do/can afford. plus u gots to have stick shifter!

I haven't seen a single answer to the OP here... just a bunch of ****-waving. Yeah, both have their pluses and minuses... he's already decided to go with hydro, so how about somebody who knows about hydro winches give the guy a hand?

it taps into the power side of your lines and dumps into the return side, kinda like a hydroboost. yes steering will be affected, but only when winching so not a big deal.

happy money?:redneck: :fawkdancesmiley:

I was workin on that.

Again, a completely different situation with the winch being used primarily for an entirely different task, not for recovery

Agree totally!!! Even if I wanted a PTO/hydro(which I don't)-I think my little sami tranny would spontaneously explode at the mere thought!!!!:haha:

Once again, I respect your preference to PTO/hydro units--and yes they are great for certain siuations, but once again, if the rig stalls for some reason, THEY ARE USELESS. And yes, I know about your maintenance schedules-read it here all the time:redneck: , but the PTO/hydros also have their maintenance needs, just as an electric...

yeh, you tap the pressure line(i figured THAT much was obvious..) i just dont know which order it goes. and i DID tell him it was one or the other, but not both at the same time. as did someone else.

and now....to find a PTO for my 4speed thats soon to be going in.
i'll throw the 8k e-winch on the rear, and run the PTO up front:awesomework:

if you have an old cast iron box like the 205 you could throw the pto on the transfer case if it helps avoid a clearence issues elseware. I have a dodge divorced np205 that I have a pto on instead of the tranny.

I have seen several hydro winches run off of its own dedicated pump for the winch, like a tow truck would be. then you have FULL power at the steering and winch at any time.
just something kinda cool about having a 4speed winch!

naw, i got a yota case. but plan on putting in the np435 soon.
not sure where i would even BEGIN to look for a PTO for that thing tho....

thanks guys for the help im REALLY leaning toward taking the hydraulic winch back and getting and electric with and just run a dual battery set up.....i dont play on going belly up but if that happens id like to be able to winch myself up right

Bummer, I know. :booo: But the same conclusion most of us had.

Get a nice Warn winch, rope.....not cable, maybe an Odyssey battery and be done with it. :awesomework:

"Better" is an opinion. We will all have one.

I like rope for my rock crawler. Other might like cable if they are mud bog guys. Whatever suits your fancy.

I will NEVER recommend wire cable over synthetic rope to fellow wheelers.
