Chevy I-5

No, not the freeway. The engine that comes in the Chevy Colorado and it's GMC twin. And now the H3T.

What can anyone tell me about this engine? Sort of aiming this towards a mechanic that has worked on them.

my dad's a master tech from GM, anything specific?
reliability? common issues? is something broken?

Yes. Well, Reliability and common issues.

Thinking of getting a smaller engine for a commuter. Bad news is it might have to be a Chevy... I don't think a 4 banger is going to do the job I need. And a six drinks a little too much.

I currently have a Dodge 4.7 High Output engine. Need to get the fuel sipping up beyond 17 mpg.

I had a Colorado Crewcab 4x4 with the I5. I really liked it. Seemed to have plenty of power and I got 20 mpg with a heavy foot. If I needed a comuter, I'd buy another one without hesitation. Just my $.02

dad says he's only seen them for mild warranty issues, but nothing he'd worry about. usually just isolated stuff.

my brother-in-law had an 05, 4 door colorado with the I-5, i think they got around 19 or so is all.....
no problems that i know of before they traded it in.

When I was at hummer/chev of bellevue we were doing alot of heads o n the h3's. We see a few heads here and there--never one that was customer pay..

I have a 05' Colorado. Its the 2wd with the I-5 motor. I really like it. The highest milage I've gotten is 24.9. I also use it to tow my Jeep. With 81000 miles on it, the only problem I've had was to replace a 02 sensor.

There have been issues with the heads, but most are taken care of before warranty's up...bottom ends seem to hold up well; I've worked on a few that have had some heater box/blend door issues, but I managed to fix them relatively easily, without having to buy the whole damn box, or taking it out (IIRC it's like a 6 hr job)!!! Most people I've talked to that own 'em like 'em!
