I eventually need to figure out what I am going to do about mounting options for an LPG tank for my CJ-5. On my CJ-7, I'm just going to put it in the bed, but I don't want to lose what little space I have in my CJ-5.

My plan is to cram a 100lb or so tank in the stock tank location. I may have to cut out the floor of the bed and raise the tank to have adequate clearance, and I'm ok with that.

Anyone here put their propane tank in the stock location? On a CJ, of course... I don't care about you non-Jeep guys. :fawkdancesmiley: :D

100 lbs tank!!! EEEK, you know how big those are!

Or to you mean 10 lbs :flipoff:

http://www.mantank.com/products/forklift/fork_alum.htm

IIRC, a 7.3-gal, 33# tank is 28-29" tall, 12.3" dia and a 10-gal, 43.5# tank is 34" tall and 12.3" dia.

a 100# is 46" tall and little over 15" dia. and weight 71lbs empty (steel)

Yeah, I know they are big, but I wasn't planning on using a single cylinder to get the 100lb. There's no way I'd fit that under a CJ-5.

I was thinking a twin cylinder tank. I'm not set on 100lbs, but I'd like to get as close to 20gal of fuel as possible. I drive the 5 to trails and sometimes around town, so I'd like to have decent range. For extended trips (like long camping trips), I'm planning on building a trailer and putting another tank on it to extend the range/storage, but I'd like to be able to take overnight trips without worrying too much about fuel, ya know?

100lb how long you plan on runnin between fills 5 or 6 trips?

not to mention 550lbs of fuel :wtf:

You could look at a RV tank made to go inside the frame rails and make something work, they also have a propane set up for diesel trucks. not sure what those tanks look like though.

How does 100lbs of fuel weigh 550lbs? I want 100lbs of fuel, not 100 gallons.

I'm just after around a 20 gallon capacity. With a 7.0L V8 in a lifted CJ, a 10-gallon forklift tank isn't going to get me very far.

If your going to be driving it on the street you might want to talk to your insurance agent first. You can find yourself in all kinds of trouble if you get into an accident in a "modified" vehicle:booo:

missread :awesomework:

I have a tank pulled from a '85 E-350 van, three cylinder, around 30-35 gallons, it's wide and most likely too big for a cj-5. I'm sure you have checked e-bay for tanks, right? Frame mounted tanks are going to be $$$.

30 gallons is way too big for my little Heep. Thanks for the post about it, though.

I have been keeping an eye on eBay, but most of the tanks I find are either standard forklift tanks or way too big.

I should have no problem finding a tank for my truck when I add propane to it, though... but that is no time in the near future. The Jeeps are first on the list for LPG.

Cut the bed out and sink (2) 10lb forklift bottles in it then build a new false-floor on top if it for all your crap.

Then you can take the tanks out to have them filled if you want (some places will hit you up or report you to pay road-tax if your rig is LPG powered).

You can also take a couple of spare tanks with you on longer trips and just manifold them in with a remote hose or swap them out as you go.

This is my plan when I get to that stage. 20gal in the truck *should* be good for most weekends, but I'll also have bracket in the bed so I can add a 7gal or 10gal tank and run on that before I get to the tanks under the bed. My biggest fear with LPG is running out on the trail (I trailer so road time isn't that big of a deal), so I would rather have too much than too little. I might refine things as I go and a get a better idea of fuel usage on a typical weekend.

The biggest downside of LPG is just what your struggling with, bulky fuel storage. Gasoline can be stored in a conformed 'box' were as LPG is stuck in fixed cylinders and with a CJ5, your options are even less.

Yeah... limited space and all that jazz. Silly CJ-5! :D

I haven't mocked up my forklift tanks to see how they will sit in the 5. I know my 10gal aluminum tanks fit perfectly mounted transversly in the bed, but I think they may not fit that way between the frame rails.
